Another guy with Stereo System issues..

Okay, so I thought I knew stereo systems until you star throwing in all of the watts and ohms and stuff... pretty sure watts are power and I learned Ohms were resistance or something... but anyway... I had a Clarion deck in my boat... 4 or 6 six inch speakers also by Clarion, and a 10 inch sub from clarion. So my heater core blew in my boat last summer and leaked water all over the sub and shorted something out in the stereo.. so it is sitting in my garage but that is okay because I'm wanting to start fresh and put some new bumbs in the raft... I need to know how I will get the most bang for my buck without getting something that is going to break.

    Here is what I want:

    1) New Deck that plugs and plays easily with my Iphone

    2) Tower Speakers...enough sound for the boarder to hear

    3) A new Amp

    4) A new subwoofer possibly..(other is still fine and rated 300w)

Im going to keep the original speakers in the boat for now too...

I want to get all of these components for less than a 1000$ dollars, if possible, by using e-bay or wholesale discount websites or whatever... you name it.. It is february and I have until April/May when I will be able to get out on the water.

Another thing I want to add is that the boat has the external remotes at the drivers position and on the rear of the boat... Id like to re use them if possible otherwise I think they have to stay on and be useless because of the way they were mounted.

So this is the goal... I prefer quality sound and will take any input except for if it is to bash me because of my low budget... lol... but honestly, I'm in the military so you know I'm broke..

    Thanks Everybody!

What model amp is currently in the boat? I'm guessing it's a 4 chnl Clarion driving the sub and cabin speakers. If it's still functional and you plan to reuse it, I think we can fix you up within your budget.

    More to come.

      A few suggestions...

If you want a HU that easily adapts with your Iphone. I would suggest one that has bluetooth capability. For some Headunits Ipod compatibility can be hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes you need to buy another $100 of adapters.

If you do shop on ebay I think you will be able to get it under $1k. But like chpthril will probably mention, the sellers on ebay are selling overstock and older models. I have a seller that I saved that sells pretty descent stuff if you would like I could give you his ebay store.

86 the tower speakers and yes you can do it. Insist on tower speakers that the rider can actually hear and $1000 is not doable.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

          Here is what I want:

          1) New Deck that plugs and plays easily with my Iphone: Clarion CMD4A. They can be had on Ebay for >$150 and should work with your existing remotes if you have any. It has an AUX unput to connect MP3 players using the headphone socket.

          2) Tower Speakers...enough sound for the boarder to hear: Kicker KTM6 tower speakers and a zx450.2 or zxm450.2. amp

          3) A new Amp: Kicker zx700.5 or ZXM700.5 amp to power the cabin speakers and sub

          4) A new subwoofer possibly..(other is still fine and rated 300w): Kicker Comp VR 10 2 Ohm DVC

Im going to keep the original speakers in the boat for now too...

There was an original amp but I thought it was blown or not hooked up correctly and my buddy took it off my hands to see if he could get it to work. I'm pretty sure it was the model that you listed. I will ask him to see if it is alright but I'm likeing all the options you threw at me. Do you think I should set up with another Clarion deck to use the remotes or do you think the brand is not decend enough? Ill check out those speakers and stuff in a couple days but I'm on a government computer so it is hard to access certain websites. Thanks for helping me out with this. I'm thinking that this stereo is going to make the season killer... You just can't have a great time without some decent tunes.

            Thanks Mang,
            Mike

Thanks man... Yeah.. Let me know that ebayers tag and I'll start doin some more HW... Another quesion regard stereo stuff..since the wiring was done by someone else over 10 years ago..should I replace it? Especiallly since the sub wires might have had water damage? And I have two batteries but do I need another when cranking the tunes without the boat running?

Speaker wire by the roll/ft is fairly inexpensive, so it's not a bad idea to replace/upgrade. Especially if the ends look like they are growing a Chia Pet or have a lot of chalky oxidation.

For the 2 new amps, you will probably need to upgrade the power/ground cable, but depends on what size (gauge) is there. if the wire is of sufficient gauge and in good condition, you could run one amp off it, then pull another set for the 2nd amp. A cleaner install would be to just pull out what is there, then run a new 1/0Ga power and ground for the new amps, then use a few feet of what you pulled out to split off from the distrobution blocks (oh yes, more $$$ ) to the amps. Then you will need circuit protection for the amps, such as marine rated manual-reset circuit breaker (my preference) or an fuse holder. For the 2 amps together, you will need a min of 150A to a max of 200A of circuit protection. If you wire then individually, the 700.5 needs 90A - 120A and the 450.2 needs 60A to 80A.

Sub - 70.00 Just make sure you get the right sub, cause I told you incorrectly in my earlier post. They come in 2 different configuration: Both are dual voice coils, but one is a 2 ohm DVC and the one you need is the 4 ohm DVC (part# 07CVR102). When wired in series, this puts a 2 ohm load on the amp, so it will produce the full 420 watts rms. This should not effect the pricing, as they cost the same, but would make a huge difference in output. Just double check, sorry any added confusion

                    700 watt amp - 300

                    450 watt amp - 204.99

Thanks, I didn't realize you answered my question already otherwise I wouldn't have sent you the other message to your personal inbox. I'm thinking I will go through and replace all the wiring just to start anew and call it my own. The distribution blocks now... is that where the box in the rear of the boat that splits off the battery and has a bunch of prongs on it (I'm guessing some are hot and some are grounds)??? Also for the amps, will I need two in-line fuses or is that what the "fuse holder" is.... I will have to look up the "marine rated manual reset breaker" to know what that is... Once again... Thanks for the insight and enjoy your superbowl... I have to work!
