    Midwest 20i

    Hey Folks,
I'm thinking seriously about making a long drive to purchase what appears to be a well cared for 2006 20i.

Does anyone on this board have a 20i within a couple hours drive of Western Ohio that they would be willing to show off?

I'm most interested in skiing behind one with someone who has already figured out where the plate should be for the different rope lengths and can demonstrate it at it's best.
    Thanks,
    Hammer

they are great boats, but I am a little far for the drive.

I have a 20i set taps at 1.5 thats what I like at 15 off 32mph for slalom. My boat is a 2004 but its the same hull.

Actually I have to drive almost that far if I buy the boat

So if 1.5 works at 15/32, does it have to move when you change rope length, boat speed or both?

A 1.5 taps setting hooks the wakes together in a nice soft rounded single hump , the shorter the line lenght the better , a traditional inboard has a thrust hump from the prop the tige because of the plate doesnt have that which is what I like. I also like to wakesurf so with taps at 2 and 11mph I move everybody in the boat to the right side and get a killer curl , so its just an all around good boat.

            taps setting

I have come to the conclusion that taps settings are somewhat subjective. I felt that on my old 97 pre 2050 the taps was best for slalom in about the 2/3 down position (they didn't have the number system in the old days). The full down position seemed to push the bow down so hard that I could feel the increased effort that was required by the prop, and there is a bit of what I refer to as thrust wash out the back. This condition seemed to be diminished when you go up to about what is today a 3-4.5 setting. This seems to hold true on my 07 20V. Yes I've gone to the v-drive because my kids are wakeboard fanatics. I can still ski quite easily at 32-34mph @15-22 off. The biggest difference is in the tracking from the pilon being rearwrd of the fins underneath. and the motor in the back. As I've said, these are just my observations and it is somewhat subjective. IT'S ALL GOOD!

Yup, TAPS is a wakeshaping device. The fact that your TAPS gauge says wakeboard and ski on it is a marketing ploy. I always adjust my TAPS to the weight I have in the boat, the speed I'm going and what we're doing (wakeboarding, wakeskating, wakesurfing, skiing or tubing).

With the Convex V hull I have found that if you want the wake bigger for wakeboarding/wakeskating, you start adding weight to the front of the boat first. It pushes that big rocker down into the water. Then adjust the TAPs to clear up any wash in front of the rider and your in great shape. It's awesome. Even in my old boat, the wake is better than many of the newer boats out today, 'cept for the Ve an RZ line.

What is amazing is that when I go 32 and trim out that TAPS, my ski wake is surprisingly small for how heavy and wide my boat is. Not as nice as the 20i, but pretty respectable for a boat that's almost 22' long and 102" wide.

20i can make the wake disappear. I can make mine go from an ok kind of rampy intermediate wake to a non-existant slalom wake. I will never get the killer wake of the newer boats though. I don't surf, but I throw HUGE wake at slow speeds. I would guess the surf wake would be pretty good with a little weight to firm it up. It is HUGE!

The 20i can throw a huge surf wake.

Thanks for all the input, I think we'll be buying the boat. I skied behind a 20V the other day (supposed to be the same hull). I have to assume that moving the engine to the middle will only improve what I consider to be a more than acceptable slalom pull. It accelerated well, tracked well, and with a little work we found a taps setting for -28, -32, and 35-off. We even ran it through the course.

                          looks great

It looks great. My experience has been that the top half of the boat should be light colored because of solar load. It gets hot to touch and will fade more. I personally looked for a mostly white boat this last go round for ease of care. My old boat was dark red and had fade problems. But I do love the dark colors. It's obviously personal pref. and very subjective.
