    Noisy reverse

Found a few threads, but no clear answers.....

Why is my direct drive so darned noisy in reverse? Is it the planetary gears in the tranny going against the cut? Sounds like a medium pitch whirring noise/squeal.

My '99 has made a whirring noise in reverse since day 1. It's normal. I've got over 430 hours on it and still going strong.

Sounds like a Velvet Drive to me. Yes, planetaries.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

Mine has made the same noise since I bought it. The dealership says it's normal. I've got over 100 hours and now I don't even hear it.

I have a 2004 Switch I with a ZF tranny. We have 102 hours on the boat. The tranny is smooth as silk in forward but noisy as can be in reverse. Everyone disagrees about how much noise the tranny should make in reverse. I have been to three different dealers and have been told that my reverse is louder than most but their isn't anything wrong with it. Its especially embarassing at the marina after fueling up, you put your tranny in reverse to back out of a slip and all heads turn your way to stare from all the noise. One mechanic at the dealership that I bought the boat from (San Ramon Marine in San Ramon California) says it should be replaced but the service manager overruled him and said it was not that bad. I am going to try one other Tige dealer to ask their opinion. If they say its OK then I am going to live with it. Thanks for the posts from other owners mentioning that a noisy reverse is normal. If I had heard this noise prior to purchase I wouldn't have bought the thing, otherwise we just love the boat.

My tige repeats over and over when in reverse, "buy another Tige...buy another Tige...buy another Tige" just like the backmasking on the Beatles albums.
