    Shaft packing

I have a 02 22ir, I started to leak water around the rubber shaft packing while on vacation in the mountians. Is there any way to tighten it up and stop the leak??? Photo to follow.

on an I its pretty easy to repack if you have to. you can try and tighten it an see if the leak stops. alot of times it will stop small leaks. if not you back nut off dig out old packing usually 4 pieces go get new packing rope. its cheap buy extra just incase you mess a piece or 2 up.make sure it is same diameter rope install the pieces one at a time into nut making sure seams dont line up and reinstall. like i said not too hard at all on an I but on a V well lets not go there i might start throwing stuff. lets just leave it as not a fun thing to do.let me know if you have more questions.
oh yeah big ps right here- dont let water come in contact with packing while your trying to but it into nut it swells and makes it a real pain to get in. make sure bildge is dry. a little vasaline on packing helps to.

The rubber on the PSS could have torn and will need to be replaced.

Four pieces of rope? Does the rope surround each washer? Mine had rope on each side of the center metal washer and then the concaved plastic washers inside the flanged two piece nuts securred by the SS counter pin. Two or four rope pieces? 99 2200i

Does anyne know what type of rope is used or where you get it from? I live in New Zealand and inboards are not very common over here so I normally have to import parts from the US. I don't really want to pull my one apart to find out the type of rope as I may find I cannot reuse the existing rope before I can replace it.
