Spiffing up the console

Anyone every attemped to paint or refinish the driver console? Its a 1999 2200i so you can imagine its time for a refresh. Currently black but looks really faded and splotchy in places. I know there are products to bring the color back, but I've found though to only be a temporary fix. Any suggestions here? If paint, what types/etc?

I've got new gauges and steering wheel coming so I would like to the rest to look good as well. thanks for all the advice so far.

where did you get the gauges and steering wheel from. been needing to spruce my 99 21v up as well

I got the part numbers for everything from Lee @ Tige. Then special ordered the Faria gauges(replacement part numbers) from West Marine. The factory VDO gauges are no longer available. Steering Wheel through local Tige dealer.
