My boat stalled out on me last time I took it out and just before it died it was billowing black smoke out the exhaust.

Which engine do you have?

If its the merc mag 350 mpi, its not timing. Go to perfprotech.com with your engine serial number and purchase the manifold "air temperature sensor" and the "coolant temp sensor" and replace both. Black smoke is unburned fuel from overfueling due to improper sensor reading. Air temp sensor is located port side of engine, on top of manifold between the distributor cap and the throttle body. Coolant temp is located at the thermostat housing. Both sensors have a 2 pin quick disconnect. Good luck and keep us posted.

Which engine do you have?

I have a 350 MPI engine like you
The distributer was removed and replace after a valve was replaced because it was burnt
so I am also interested in the proper procedure to set the timing.

this is what I have found out:
Connect (short)the C&D connectors on the diagnostic connector and set the timing at 8BTDC After the timing is set pull wire from the C&D connector and that should be it.

Your procedure is correct. Keep in mind the engine will run at approx 1200 rpm when you short the connectors so don't be surprised.
