Hi, New to the forum. The above mentioned, typically after sitting for a week, or after running and sitting for an hour, will not start immediately. Takes a lot of cranking, suddenly fires up. The battery is good, fuel pump comes up to pressure (you hear it activate, then stop), starter cranks fine. The fuel filter is 2 years old, fresh non ethanol gas, fresh spark plugs. I believe the starter would not work if it was a faulty neutral switch? It hasn't stranded us, yet, but I'd to get this addressed. Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated.

So that era has the ignition sensor. Do a search on the forum for its replacement but basically take a look at the bottom of the distributor and see if there are 2 wires or 3 wires coming out of it, white with green stripe, white with red stripe and black. If only 2, no black wire, replace with the updated version and ONLY MERCRUISER. Do not install and aftermarket piece of crap. Mercruiser part numberSENSOR ASSEMBLY (#87-892150Q02)
