I lay the remote oil drain line in the bilge under the engine so it is out of the way of everything.
I could be way off base here, but I think the reason the drain hose is routed to the top of the motor is so that if the hose is breached or the fitting comes loose, you don't dump your engine oil in the bilge and fry your engine.
Sometimes practicality take precedence over style.
