Umm, the owner of the storage facility does not have a leg to stand on. This is open and shut. Unbelievable that he left his COVERED storage units WITHOUT A ROOF for the winter. Really sorry this happened man, but don't let this guy off the hook for ANY reason!!

Good thing you have insurance!! Touch nothing and let BoatUS do your leg work. I would not even contact the storage facility again - not even once!

They might give you a check (that is the hope) and if you want the money and do not mind DIY projects, Google killing mold. It will likely give you a homemade-capable recipe of Amonia and H2O.

It'll work out for the better. One way or another. And remember all things happen for a reason

But let me get this straight, the roof was off all winter???

It wasn't off all winter. The roof was off for "oh, a week or so "< quote of the owner. Gustav or one of those hurricanes came through and blew it off. I don't really have a problem with the roof flying off. Sh!t happens. But he didn't call and tell me what happened!!! I would have gone down and gotten my boat! Apparently it rained for 4 days in my boat at least. Nice. The plug was in because I learned from past experience with my I/O that the plug hole looks enticing to critters. Besides, the place was covered and dry as a bone when I stored it there in October. I didn't need to take out the plug and was glad not too.

Dude, that sucks. The storage place needs to be slapped silly.

That is the first time I have ever heard anyone ever give a decent reason to keep the plug in, but I have heard dozens of these stories that illustrate why you should keep the plug out. No one would have ever dreamed of this happening in a covered storage place, but you wouldn't have even knew it happened had the plug been out.

I keep the plug out even in my own garage.

Sounds like the storage owner gambled that no one would notice, and now got burned. I'd sick your insurance company on them, just a really bad business practice!

BTW, if you engine has mold on it, most likely you will need to replace both the starter and the alternator. I'd check the major fuse on the engine block as well.

BoatUS says mold and mildew isn't covered in the "Yaytc" policy. I looked it up...that's a fact. Apparently that's standard for marine policies. They did say that I have a good case for gross negligence though. My local Tige dealer said that it will be 1K to clean it. Servpro and another place both recommend replacing all carpet and vinyl because it's very hard to get rid of mold all together. A marine surveyor is coming out tomorrow or Friday.
                    This sucks.
Sorry for the mispellings, etc...too pissed off to worry about it.

lesson learned. Although I still think it would be a problem.

I have a covered storage spot as well. I do pull the plug...just in case and cover my boat (loosely) with my boat cover. I don't pull the straps down or even zip up my tower cut-outs. I've found it really helps keep the dust out. If the roof were to blow off or even leak, I'd know it because the water would collect in the cover. It would leak a little bit over time, but I check on it fairly often so it's not really a problem.

I know hindsight is 20/20. Just some tips to pass along.

I hope they get it fixed up for you soon and keep an eye on your starter/alternator. With that much humidity, I'd be worried they would start to rust. I know this from experience.

Sorry to hear about the problem with your boat and I hope it gets resolved soon. The season is here.
You have to post some pictures of the mess. I can't even imagine what it looks like. It just sounds so bad.

Hey, BrownClown, I see you've been posting in other threads about going out in your boat. How did the cleanup go, and how's the situation with holding the storage place responsible?

It went fine and not as expensive as originally quoted. They steam cleaned it and sprayed mold killer on it. They did an outstanding job. It still cost me $700. As far as the storage unit ower ,he's run the list of excuses on why he can't pay. All his customers left, the ones left aren't paying, his ex-wife took all of his good units, blah blah blah. I'm filing small claims paperwork tomorrow. Good times.
