My Coast Guard time was mostly spent working immigration and search and rescue(SAR) up and down the west coast (Mexico to the Arctic circle). Some DEA stuff off central and south america. Pretty fun when your young and dumb, now that I'm a husband and father I get choked up just thinking about having to leave them for months, years or forever.
My nephew is finishing up his 2nd tour as a U.S. Marine in Iraq. He sent some pics last month of an ambush he was in, looks like he might have gotten his first kill(s). Don't know for sure, but it sure was a mess. Hope he comes back to us the same good natured fun-to-be-around kid he was 8 months ago, but I dought it.
So, are you concidered a "civilian" contractor?

Yep, I am a civilian working under a State Dept Contract. Prior to this I worked in Iraq under a DOD contract. We work with the US Military, British Military, and Afghan Counter Narcotic Task Force.

There are alot of civilians working in every role you can imagine all over the world, electrical, logistics, construction, administration, even intelligence and what I do, Security. Everyone I work with is prior Military, most former Special Ops of some sort.

And yes, being away from home sucks. But in this economy it is a secure job that pays very well, so it's give and take man.

I spent some time in Central America in the mid 80's in the Army, who knows we may have run across some of the same people. Small world.

Best wishes to your nephew, I would not worry too much as the Marine Corp seem to take very good care of their people.

      Take care.

This coming from someone who's shooting back at you when you turn your back to them!

But I'm sure you get lots of that over that.

Seriously brother, thank you for your service. I have employees that I consciously and regretably send into harms way, working along side you rebuilding things. Please be safe!
Being a major OU fan and a staunch conservative.... I am perpetually vexed w/ the conundrum of who to hate more. Obama or the Univ. of Saxet.
