Some do it at the start or end of each season buts its not necessary. This just reduces the chance of having a blowout over the summer.
It is mandatory to have a back up though! It will ruin your day! I know because it happened to us.Common Sense is not so Common

Every other season (in the Spring) at the least, but a lot change it yearly. It can last two seasons but for $40 an impeller, it's definitely cheaper than purchasing a new engine.
