I've used a product called Ski Saver for this, most good ski shops will carry it yet. Used to be big in the 80's to help protect the tops of your skis but it works good for boats too.

Put a strip of similar product on mine 2 yrs ago. Well worth it!

I used 3M polyurethane on my 22V 2003 transom. Maybe it is the same stuff.

I have one that covers the whole back transom from top to bottom. Love it and yes it has its dings and nicks but works great. I have had it on the boat for 4 years now.
