Need help changing V-drive and trans fluid.

How do you change the trans fluid and v-drive fluid on an 05 24V?
Also, what fluids should be used?
    Thanks, TD

Here is a thread/writeup I did while changing my 06. It's pretty easy.

My BorgWarner trans uses Dexron ATF and the V-drive uses 30W non-detergent motor oil.

Changed the oil and filter today - 9.5 quarts is always amazing but that is what it takes.

Checked the trans fluid and it was full. Can you suck the trans fluid out of the dipstick hole? I can do this without removing the rear seat.

Right out the dip stick is what I did, but will you be able to refill it it with the seat still in place?

I can fill the trans easily, but the v-drive will require the seat to be removed.

Lee, I have the 6.0 and when I did this last spring, I contacted MP. The tech said it was not uncomman for the 6.0 engine. He said they put many different size pans on these engines.

I checked the oil with the dipstick after the filter change and that is what it took to top it off.

I also checked an old receipt from Tige in Phoenix and saw where they had used 9 quarts on an oil change.

Holy crap! You really need to start buying your oil by the barrel.

My PCM 6.0 takes 6 Qts. 9.5 seems like a lot. MP had issues with the dip stick giving the wrong reading you may have the dip stick. I am not sure of all the detail of that but you should research that. If you put to much oil in you will be taking out oil seals and piston rings in your engine. To much oil is not good.

Marine Power said that it was not uncomman because they used several different oil pans on the 6.0's. Tige changed the oil in 07 and said it was not uncomman also (so said the bill for 9 quarts of oil). We have logged almost 300 total hours over the last two summers without problems or oil consumption. I must have an odd ball pan.

Did MP state that they use(d) 9 qt pans? I'd think such a pan would need ears at the bottom to hold that much oil while allowing the engine to sit down in the bilge.

I can't recall ever hearing of an American factory (gasoline) pan that held that much oil. A short dipstick/ long dipstick tube combination could set the Full line too high in the engine leading one to think more oil is needed than should be. Does the oil look frothy when checking it when hot?

Now, my Mercedes CLK 430 takes eight quarts and my Dodge Cummins diesel holds 12 quarts... I guess I should befriend an oil sheik.

Lee at MP said to get pictures of the pan and he would let me know exactly what I have. Hope to do this in a couple of weeks. We shall see.....................
