Towing with a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

I just love the look of the new Wrangler unlimited with bigger tires and a reasonable lift, so I was searching the internet for information on how much it could tow and if it could tow my 2100V. It looks like I will have to look for something else to replace my aging Tahoe as the unlimited is only rated for 3500# and the boat and trailer with fuel are over 4000#

Although I saw this pic and just had to laugh.

I think I might check out the new Hummer H3T.

You can't take the top off but seems like a pretty cool truck that would pull the boat.
Anyone driven or have an opinion on this truck?
There are some good deals out there.

i would think the wrangler would do the job with the v8, but the issue is that the wheel base is so short the boat will "throw" you around.

I used to have a 2 door tahoe to pull my 21IR and it just threw me around too much.

I don't think the new wrangler unlimited is available with a V8. Its a four door so the wheel base is longer than a standard jeep.

That picture you posted if I were to guess is of a guy towing a mile or two on the flats to a launch. There is no way he is towing on any hills or long distances with that setup.

I used to pull my MC with a 4 cylinder wrangler, but I'm in Florida with no hills and the MC doesn't weigh that much, definitely look for something else

It all depends on how far you need to go. We used to tow boats around with my neighbor's Willis (4 cylinder WWII era jeep). It had a great granny gear, but we were only going a couple of hundred yards on roads that had a 15 MPH speed limit and no real hills.

I have pulled the boat as far as Indiana to Memphis TN and from Memphis TN to Miami, FL. We will often trailer the boat distances longer than 60 miles. I'm looking for that perfect balance of fuel mileage, safety and that all important "cool" factor.

A newer Tahoe would probably be a good choice, but I'd like to get something different than what I currently have.

I've drove the new unlimited. They are really nice compared to the normal 2 door. More functional for every day life and more practical. Its not just a toy. Unless you want it to be

I have one, and its a great vehicle, but I wouldn't tow my pontoon with it, which is probably less weight than a 2100v. The wrangler still has a shorter wheelbase, and the v6 is not powerful enough. It has great traction, and low gears, but those won't help you on the highway going up an incline, or in the wind or under braking when the trailer is throwing you around. It works PERFECT for towing our 2 waverunners though, because of the jeep having a shorter wheelbase, and tight radius, it is much easier to back up that small wave runner trailer with it. We used it this late summer to put our wave runners in at the steep mud ramp at lake oroville, and the 4wd pulled it right out. It would prob do ok with the pontoon, but I wouldn't trust it in more risky conditions.

If your looking for the cool factor get a lifted, used durmax. Great MPG, and no problems ever to tow your boat.

                      Ask GMAN or G-Money,

                      They will chime in.

I towed about 3000 lbs from Criag CO to Norman OK average speed 80mph and average MPG was 17. U really can't beat that.

I drove an h3, and my boss has one, they are ok, but I would still look for something with more capacity and power if you were looking to tow long distances. When we first had our tige I was towing with a short box regular cab silverado z71, and the boat still pushed that thing around enough to make a long drive quite uncomfortable. The inline 5 is a little gutless for that heavy of a vehicle, and only has a tow rating of 4400 lbs. The v-8, starting at $36k, that is offered now bumps the tow rating to 5900 lbs, and that is supposed to include all persons and gear, so a 3700 pound boat plus fuel, trailer, and gear, is probably a little over 5000lbs anyways. I do like the look of the h3, that's why I looked at it. But they are not terribly comfortable and get pretty poor fuel economy.

While diesels are the way to go, you can get some good deals on an '08 F-150. I pull my Tige 2100v with a 4x4 Supercrew and it does great.

We have an 08 Tahoe Flex Fuel LT. It handles the 20V like nothings there but mileage is 12-13mpg.A nicely equiped LT runs $35k or under.

We have an 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has the 4.7L and it does an ok job with the 20V. I use it for short weekend jaunts but there is not enough cargo space for people and our labs for a long trip. I wouldn't tow more than a 22' 5500lb load with it. It is just too small for sizes larger than that unless it is a short haul.
