It would be far more dangerous to tow at 55mph on the highway that I am on than to tow at 75. The speed limit is 75mph and people do well over 90 and will literally run you off of the road.

True, I am sure there are times but here in CA, the speed is 55 mph for the trucks and trailers.

The wipe out at 80 will be significantly different than at 60. (Kinetic Energy) KE = 1/2 mvsquared. assuming the same mass, at 80mph the KE is twice that of 60mph.

I guess I was thinking though that a wipe out at 60 would be really really bad anyway. Once the the fatal tipping point is crossed, does it really matter how far it is crossed...

Having said that, I like my chances far better blowing a tire or losing an axel/springs, etc at 60.

It is amazing to read that you guys are towing at 80 - 90+...

It's easy to do in the midwest, our roads are quite straight considering the only thing they are cutting through is corn fields, not mountains

Lift kits add their own special drama to events like blown tires. High center of gravity, coupled with the high speeds at which tires are more likely to come apart, is an especially bad combination.

I've seen two upside down SUVs on I-5 between Los Angeles and San Francisco where the road is nearly as straight as through a Midwest cornfield. Both sites had SUV contents strewn for a hundred yards or so from where they left the road - one into the median, the other to the shoulder. Neither SUV was towing a trailer, or were lifted. Both accidents probably resulted from tire issues.

Yikes 80-90 mph towing? For real? Trailer tires are really not designed for those speeds. If you are bored sometime check the tire temp with hand help pyrometer at 55 and then like 70 mph and you will see a huge difference.

My tow vehicle is a 2005 E-350 6.0 PSD. I initially used this rig to race supermoto out of as I could fit 3 CRF450 Honda's in her and that is with 1 bench seat installed. At 70 mph @2000 RPM's I get 18-21 mpg!! Towing my boat I get @ 11-14 and that is with on average 6 adults along for the ride. I only live 25 miles to Boulder Launch at Lake Mead.
My 6.0 diesel has 80k miles and has had only 1 injector replaced and that was @ 35k miles. I have put 30k of those miles and only have had to do regular maintenence. Love it so far! I do have all the seats and was lucky enough to shuutle a bachelorette party of 12 around 'Vegas for a night!!!
