Bad news from local river outing

I fell while wake surfing on the Trinity river during the Texas Tige owners outing. Just as I fell I took a breath and happed to suck in water into my lungs. I came up coughing up water. First time that has ever happened to me in my 20+ years of riding.

It has been two weeks and have had trouble with cough and such. Very much flu like symptons without the fever. After 2 trips to the local urgent care facilty, they could not tell me anything other than looks like pneumonia and take some antibotics.

It was not getting any better so I went to the ER on Thursday. At first Er thought it was TB like symptoms and was in lock down for 12 hours. Eventunally they determined it was not TB. I was admitted with aspriation pneumonia. That nasty water caused an infection in my lungs which turned into pneumonia. Will be in the hospital for 5 days recovering.

    2 lessons learned!
    1. Do not suck in river/lake water - yeah I know but just happend
    2. If you suck in the water and experience flu like symptoms - Go to the ER immediately!!!

I am lucky this was not flesh eating bacteria or I would probably be dead.

Now has anyone ever had this happen to them on their local river / lakes?

Have not skied in 2 weeks and now realize that I have a hydrofoil addiction!!! Someone needs to go out and ride and post some action pictures!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Glad to hear that you are going to be OK. Those kinds of pneumonia can be pretty nasty. Not only are the bacteria pretty icky, but having dirt, algae, and even just plain water is toxic to lung tissue. The irritation from that stuff can be as bad as the infection part of it. I assume the instacare folks put you on antibiotics? Because much of what you have is a toxic reaction, antibiotics are not perfectly effective, and the antibiotics that you do need are a little different type of antibiotic that I am sure they did not give you the first time around.

I hope you get well quick!
    Be excellent to one another.

It has sucked but atleast it was not flesh eating. The nurse had a case last year where the guy got a cut while wade fishing in saltwater and got the flesh eating type. He was dead within 24 hours.

The hospital has giving me a much stronger dose and according to the lung doctor I am getting better.

I heard that if you suck in salt water they send you to the ER immediately to get all the water and salt pumped out, regardless if you feel fine or not.

You need to spend some time in our lakes here. Couple sips of our sludge and your lungs will build antibodies that talk smack to wimpy little bacteria. Nasty water here!

Hope your back on the chair soon......and remember to close your mouth when you crash
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

It was wild. I was taking a breathe and the board went out. Next thing I knew, I was coughing out liquid crap.

It looks like I might get to go home tomorrow. They took out my IV tonight and have me on pills.

                      Sean,
You still coming in town this week? I think I will be ok to have lunch with you on Thursday if things go like they are.

Brandon from Texas Tige' made a great call. He had an fresh motorcycle burn on his leg. He did not get in the river. He was the smartest guy that weekend.

So when we go to Texas, remember, don't drink the water.

We are in a river all the time swimming and such... quite a few times the kids will come up coughing water. glad to hear about this!

I grew up in salt water and took my fair share out of the sea growing up on a boogie board and body surfing. wonder why nothing like this ever happened to any of us???

Glad to hear that you are getting better and in the meantime, check your personal page.
