He's right about faster time to plane, especially for a heavily weighted boat. Any time you down pitch, that's going to happen. It also helps your speed control work better because it will be more responsive at slower speeds. As for fuel efficiency, what he says is only true if you do a lot of starting and stopping. I recently started taking out a more advanced wakeboard ride crew where the riders don't fall as often and you will actually burn more fuel in that scenario because you're average speed (including time spent picking up riders and restarting) is much higher. So, it's all a trade-off.
Generally, the rule of thumb is that a lower pitch prop (which is that second number) will cause you to get a better hole shot, but also cause you to run at higher RPMs at cruising speed (20+ Mph). For wakesurfing, the lower pitch prop is definitely better because it provides faster times to wakesurf speeds and more precise control maintaining that speed. If you're wakeboarding (we average about 23 Mph between our various riders) most of the time, you may consider more pitch to be able to run more efficiently at wakeboard speeds.Cursed by a fortune cookie: "Your principles mean more to you than any money or success."

y, I understand how pitch works and the benefit, but I wasn't aware of a 1" bigger diameter prop, and exactly what that did.
I used to have this cool stainless prop on my IO 2 boats ago. It actually shifted. from 16 pitch to 19 pitch. It was like driving my old 2 speed 1968 Nova. You felt it shift too, it was pretty cool.http://wake9.com/

OK, so time to update this. My dad and I made a template from wood, with the new shape, but this time matching the radius of the back of the boat.
Here is the old template, I don't have pictures of the new.
Anyway, we took it to a metals place, and we have orders a 3/4" thick pc of aluminum to be cnc'd to spec. I have also purchased the gator grip to go on top. So I am replacing my old swimstep with this new shape.
It weighs 150 lbs by itself. Some ballast right there, all the way in the back. I went with 3/4" to be very sturdy, and also because I wanted the bottom to be PERFECTLY smooth, so no ribs or anything for strength.
I am supposed to get the metal back tomorrow, we are going to route the edges to make smooth, then install. Should be interesting. Then we will test it. I will take pictures and put up here when I get them.http://wake9.com/
