Marine Power concerns

I have a 07 24Ve I bought it in December last year, We first put it on the water in April by June we had our 30 hr service. Now we have 90 hr's on it. I just took it in for some service work and one of the thing was the error buzzer. When the buzzer went off I checked all gauges and everything was great. The buzzer lasted for about 5 seconds. Well the dealer just called and said my boat was 2 quarts low on oil. There is no signs of leaks anywhere the dealer said it is burning it. I have never had a new motor burn two quarts of oil. I was told a marine motor burnes oil more than a car motor. I have been around motors for my whole life and have never heard of this.

There is a dipstick recall that your dealer should have known about. I'll bet they under filled it at the last service

I asked them that and they said that was checked and mine did not need to be repaired.So what is the averge hrs' for a oil change this year we did 90 hrs.

1st at 20hrs and then every 50 or at winterization.

My dealer recommends every 100 hours or at least once a season...which ever comes first. I have over 700 hrs on my boat and it's not burning oil.

I agree and for mine to burn 2 quarts in 60 hours

Be careful with the oil, there's a dipstick recall on that motor that causes it to read low oil. If you overfill, it's a real problem. Basically, the dipstick supplied was to short.

I would have seen it smoking if it burnt 2 quarts of oil. I think they under filled it.

I just spoke direct to Marine Power on Monday about some other issues and the oil consumption on my 2008 340 hp. They very emphatically told me that they WANT to see oil consumption at the rate of approximately 1 qt. every 20-30 hrs. For what it's worth they said that their motors have much softer rings than a "normal" automotive engine because they want a little blow by for more top end lubrication. Don't know if this helps or not but that's the story I got.

I have about 800 hard hrs on my SBC and it uses no oil between changes and I typically change it about every 30 hrs. I sent an oil sample off once couple months ago when it had about 25hrs on that oil change and the oil I removed had some life left in it but not 75 hrs more for sure. I would feel better changing the oil early rather then later and 100 hrs seems like a long time for a marine engine, at least IMHO. I typically change oil more often the average bear because it makes me feel better and oil is cheap...well sorta. I would be curious what an oil analysis report would be for a 100 hr change, I bet it is used up.

I am very skeptical of the MP having"softer rings". As far as I know every marine engine rolls off the same GM power plant line before going to Mercruiser, Volvo, MP or whomever for marinerazion. A quart of oil every 20 hrs is nutz. I would do leakdown test and go from there.

I have the same boat that you do, an 07 24ve with an mp engine, and my boat was using a lot of oil just like yours, we had the issue with the dipstick at first. After we got the right dipstick in it it still kept using oil. My dealer did a compression check and two of the cylinders were running at about 20%, So they ended up sending a new long block and putting it in the boat. I was without my boat for a month.
