My son earned his Eagle in 2006. Scouting is big in KC area, active for adulds and boys. Where I grew up in St. Louis and it wasn't strong--I didn't know what an eagle scout was unitl college on a camping trip when a friend of mine lit a fire in the rain. Asked him where he learned that and he said he was an Eagle Scout. I asked if that was like a Boy Scout. He told me what it entailed and I made a mental note right then and there that if I ever had a son, it would be fantastic thing to earn. I am very proud of him.

I have learned more practical knowledge as an adult Scouting leader than almost anything I can think of. Not being an eagle myself is one of my few life regrets.

I got as far as my arrow of light. We moved after that and my parents did not get me involved in Boy Scouts. We were 4 blocks from the beach and I took up surfing and girl watching.

Looking back it would have been cool to continue. Both of my boys have tried cub scouts but the pack was not that large (did not do much outside of the meetings) and they both lost interest. It seems that all Tiger cubs do is scrapbooking.
If its not fun, Why do it?

If he's Life before 16, he will have no trouble. My son did his Eagle Board of Review 3 weeks before his 18th b/day

The best advice is to get involved on the committee level as well as active in your sons' den. Talk with leaders of other Packs and see how they keep the boy's interest. Dont push them tho, I did not like the Cub program and dropped out, but got back into Scouting in 1981 @ 11 and I'm still in it

You are probably right. The Tigers felt like a toddler and me program for mothers and their first graders.

I wish I had finished mine up but I really got into scouting to go camping and to get outdoors. I did complete the Order of the Arrow and we made a trip down to Philmont Scout Camp for a week of hiking.

In the end snowboarding, hunting and girls ended up killing my scouting career but I have nothing but awesome memories of it.

                        Nice pic Team Allen.
IMHO, Tiger, Cubs and Webelos are the biggest killer of Boy Scouts. (Me included)
A boy can start in Scouts without being a Tiger/Cub/Webelo

Best part of Cub Scouts? Pinewood Derby. Best reason to be a dad of a kid in Cub Scouts? You finally GET to make the Pinewood derby car that your dad made when you were a cub!

If you have cubs/webelos, stick with it, as Boy Scouts is better in every way. Watching unsure 5th graders olds grow into confident young men in a few short years before your eyes is worth every hour you invest.

All boats are fun. Some are more fun. All scout ages are fun, some are more fun:
Tiger Cubs is your first outboard. Fun. On water. But gets boring.
Cubs/Webelos is your first 20'+ I/O. Better. Faster. Funner, but still not it.
Boy Scous is your Tige Inboard/vDrive with v8, TAPS, ballast, kicking stereo... Takes time, effort, resources, is fun and totally worth it. Something you are proud of.

WOW allot of you guys are/ were involved in scouts...

I was in cub scouts for about a month then we moved and scouts was NOT the cool thing to do, so I played baseball.
Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity. Albert Einstein

Scouting was never "cool" in the eyes of a lot of people in school, but when they started talkin smack, I dared many to go camping with us in sub-freezing temps with frozen precip falling ...................none ever did, I guess they were too macho to handle it.

I made to Webelo. Then our scouting program kind of died out. Found other interests to replace it with. Loved the pinewood derby and we also had rocket races. Pinewood derby back in my day is not as crazy at it is now
                              Let it be!!!

Well I camped in bear infested remote parts of Alaska for weeks at a time and never went to scouts...... I guess I'm just gifted
