I feel for you and your damage.
That was my fear and I always spotted an area that I was not familiar with. When I went down to Shasta last year I cruised around the first day just looking for nasty rocks that were waiting to wreck my boat and ruin my trip.
It is really important to do this even in your own lakes that you are familiar with because lowered water levels can reveal some seriously nasty stuff.
No insurance man? Well I will leave that one alone.

      Update

I had everything taken care of, so I figured I'd post the results.

As you know, I pulled all the hardware myself and straightened the tracking fins with a torch/hammer. The strut was almost straight when it snapped in half. But I was able to work the prop shaft to runout within .002" after about 6 hours of work on the lathe. SPBFAN hooked me up with a new Acme prop, and I picked up a new strut as well.

I only got two quotes on the fiberglass repair and parts reinstallation. $8500 from SeaView Marine (and he said he cut me a deal), and $2500 from WayPoint Marine. That price did not include a full bottom repaint, just spot painting over the repaired areas.

Since I simply don't have $8500, I went with Waypoint. The guys there are really nice. I stopped by a few times to check up on the progress, and am very happy with the work that was done. I took the trailer home while the boat was blocked up so I could do some needed repairs to the fenders and guilde boards. They even let me store the boat inside their warehouse for a week after it was completed while I was out of town. The day I picked up the boat it was cold, and pouring rain. By the time I got the boat to storage it was dark, so I parked it and went home. I still haven't crawled under there to give everything a close inspection or put it in the water to test run the new underwater gear.

      $2595.29 Fiberglass repair
      $415 New Acme prop
      $391 New prop strut

You should look into insuring your boat. Probably 350-400 a year works out to be cheaper than the $3k spent.
