I grew up in Southern California and have lived in the Northwest for 14 years.
I have no problem dealing with earthquakes but there is no way I would live in a place that had hurricanes and tornado's and I can't figure why anyone would want to.

The storm surge is what everyone's worried about. The storm is now covering the *entire* Gulf of Mexico.

Good luck to everyone and stay safe. Been through several Hurricanes myself when I lived in Fla. so I would go if I could. I stayed when Andrew hit, will never do that again.

Thanks Dog! That site has a lot of information.

I've got a brother, with family, in Houston. I think they are evacuating to San Antonio?

At least with a hurricane you know it is coming, how strong it is going to be, and you have time to get out. With an earthquake you find yourself on the floor with your house crumbing around you. No thanks. I will stay with predictable events. Tornadoes you sometimes get a small warning and you hopefully have a storm shelter.

And for reference I have been chased by a tornado, weathered a hurricane, involved with forest fires, dealt with major floods, and staggered through a couple of major earthquakes. The earthquakes were the worst of them all.

I hope the predictions were wrong at the surge does not reach 15 feet.
                        Stay safe Texans!

Per my mother, the storm surge is expected to hit 25 feet in Houston.
