Pending Eye Surgery

Well, I have had my share of adventures with my eyes. I had Lasik done several years ago and highly recommend the procedure. The problem is that my eyes are still shaped like a near sighted person. That increases the chance for retina problems.

Well I had mine. One day my eye was full of billions of little spots. They were blood particles. A vein had torn loose and there was blood in the eye. I suffered through that for some time before the little particles started clumping and blocking my vision. To cure that I had vitrectomy.

One of the side effects of a vitrectomy is retina tears. Well that happened so I had to have those lasered. Lasering the eye is definitely uncomfortable. The tears (rips) are outside the visual area so are not a real problem.

Another side effect is cataracts. Well I have now developed a cataract. The doctor said it is ripe for picking. I have surgery scheduled for the 16th of September. According to the doctor my vision in my left eye will substantially improve. They will put in a distance lens to match my right eye.

I will need reading glasses which I use now anyway. So when it is over things should be back to fairly normal.

Getting old sucks, just flat out sucks.

Man that is crazy. I am sure it is not caused by the Lasik Surgery though. I had it 9 years ago and no problems yet. I have noticed that reading is getting a little hard at times but the doctor says it is normal nothing else going on in there and everything looks very healthy and clean in fact he says it is almost impossilbe to see the surgery.

Wow... that is amazing. It is a good thing though that there are things that can be done to help you overcome all of the issues!! I do hope that everything comes out well for you!!!

Good luck. Glad to hear you guys approve of lasix though as I am getting mine done next month. I had to weight till the boatin season was over.

My eye doc mentioned that generally Lasic moves up the need for reading glasses by about 5 years. Seems like a worthwhile trade though (over wearing glasses all the time without).

The Lasik had nothing to do with the other adventures. Apparently when you are extremely nearsighted as I was (when skiing it was difficult to see the green buoys) the shape of the eye makes it more susceptible to some type of membrane separation. That of course happened.

The vitrectomy was necessary because it was causing problems with vision. When the fluid is replaced they use a vibrating device to liquefy the gelatin stuff in the eye. This caused the retina detachment. At the time I was also told I had the start of cataracts and would eventually probably require lens replacement.

The tears in the retina were not serious and were caught quickly. But I have to tell you that lasering is very uncomfortable. Each blast of the laser is like someone hits you in the back of the eye and you get this aching sensation. Both times I had it done there were about 30 blasts each time.

The cataract surgery is supposed to be a much easier process than the vitrectomy was and that was really not at all difficult.

The doctor that is doing the surgery is my bosses younger brother.

You will never, ever, regret the procedure. Having endured thick glasses for years having Lasik is a decision that I have never regretted. Just being able to waterski and see where the buoys are located, that stick in the water that smacks your skis and stings your foot. Just being able to swim and see when you get out of the water is just amazing. Being able to wear regular sun glasses, look through a camera view finder and see the complete image, no more fogged glasses, chromic aberrations, etc.

Be prepared to be amazed.

I had enhanced lasik done about two years+ ago now and wished i'd done it sooner! My vision is still 20/15 to this day. BUT ... I can't read crap unless i use reading glasses. Not a big deal after you get used to it, after 40 it's pretty much a given for most people anyway so what the hell. With the enhanced i can see so well in the dark i'm like a cat, super stealthy baby!

Hey, I had perfect vision. Last year, I had to break down and get reading glasses.

Yeah i could read no problem at 49 or so without reading glasses too. How's it feel looking like old grandpa with the freaking glasses perched on your nose!
