Post for Phil - 1956 Lyman

This weekend was our annual Boy Scout trip to the lake and one of our leaders brought his families 1956 Lyman wooden Run-about. This boat has been in the family since new. His grandfather purchased it new in 56 and he grew up skiing behind this boat, but never drove it till it was given to him 6 weeks ago.

It got a mild restoration about 5 years ago which included the new 40hp Merc to replace the 70' era Johnson. The funny thing is, the dealer that sold them, and installed, the new engine, didnt inform them that the old engine was rated at the flywheel, and the new Merc is rated at the prop. Needless to say it has a bit too much motor.

The boat has not been in the water since the resto 5 yrs ago so it's a little dry and leaks. Bilge runs about 20 secs every 30 mins.

That is hilarious seeeing that old Wilcox-Crittendon cable-steering system on that new motor.

The lapstrake-style construction might always leak, a little, but the pump frequency you suggest sounds about normal. It might slow down after being in the water a day or two...

That is the same boat my Grandfather had! Learned to ski behind it as a young kid. Always thought the finished wood made for the coolest looking boat. His had a Johnson on it though. Did a lot of fishing out of that boat too. Used oars for a trolling motor.

Sept. 5-7 is the classic wooden boat show up here on Lake Norman.

Been there for the last two and they have some great antique rides that show up every year

ballast was in the small compartments in the rear. For that boat is was called the battery.

That's awesome, I almost bought an old grady white a few years ago that was only $700, had and original evinrude on it that still ran great. The guy would actually put wet towels in it a couple days before wanting to take it out so it would swell back up and seal to not take on too much water.
