boat fire, how often do you use your blower?

Found these pics of a boat fire at lake powell, there are quite a few more in the sequence but I just copied these two. It got me thinking about how often I use the blower, which is not very often. But then again, I rarely fill my boat with gas while on the water. I guess I figure that it will vent itself on the drive from the gas station to the water.

How often do others vent their bilge?

I leave my blower on from the time I get to the boat ready area to the time I pull off the lake. I might turn it off if we are just floating or beached but will turn it back on 5 minutes before starting the boat

I open the engine cover on start up when launching. I do switch the blower on for maybe 30 seconds after sitting awhile. Two boats and no blow up yet.

Flash fire while I was starting the boat (first boat). 2nd degree burns, leg hair, arm hair, facial hair..............gone I dove overboard cause I didn't know if I was on fire or not! Luckily it was only fumes and was out just as quick as it ignited.

I leave mine on lately. I was having a problem starting the boat for awhile there and I thought the starter may have been getting hot. Since I started leaving it on I haven't had a problem. I'm sure this isn't the fix, but I feel better.

After launching at the dock for a few minutes before starting.
Also installed a Xintex gas fume detector warning gauge.
It will automatically turn on the blower if gas fumes, battery hydrogen or exhaust fumes are detected.

I turn mine on as soon as the cover is pulled off and then usually turn it off a few minutes after being in the water.
