Alternator???

    Alternator???

    I was out on the lake sunday after noon when I ran into problems

    The boat was running and I had just come off plane from surfing. Went to put the boat back in gear to pull a rider up and all it would do was idle....

    I could peg the throttle and it would just idle. at the same time I noticed the volt gauge was at 10....

    So of course I called chp. I checked and its not the throttle cable or the linkage because its moving at the throttle body. other than that I havent had a chance to check it because of school.

    Im thinking the alternator went bad and hopefully just put the boat into limp mode any other ideas?

    Just to double check your gauge put a volt meter on the back of the alternator and see if you read 10 volts...........on a different note......how do you reset "limp" mode.

      What engine do you have?

      My experience with the alternator going bad was that my boat would run until the battery no longer had enough juice to run the engine and then it would just die.

      If you haven't replaced your battery in the last 2 years, it might be worth pulling your battery(s) and get them tested at some place like Autozone.

        I have the MP 340 hp, and I just replaced both my batteries...

          Have you checked your ground wire coming from the engine? Perhaps you have a loose connection somewhere. There was a thread about this a while back.

            If voltage goes below 10.5 like 10.4 or lower it is time for Limp mode baby. It is a standard procedure for cars & Trucks also. You just would not notice it as much in the cars and trucks. You need to get 12V or better back to the system first and for most. Then we can go from there. Charge the batteries with a charger and see if it will engage the transmission and such. If so you know where to go and what to do.

              Why can't he take the alternator out and take it down to the local auto store to have it tested?

                It can actually be tested in place with a DVOM, like i told him sunday

                    When cranking the voltage drop will be about 3 volts and the computer needs around 9v to run.

                      This is incorrect. Depending on the CCA of the Battery will determine if the battery has enough to start the engine or not. Generally speaking that point is 10.5V. Not always there is so many factors that can play into this. The first and foremost thing he needs to do is verify the battery integrity. Then the charging system integrity. With those Wet Sounds He could be killing his battery. Ha Ha. Anyways I am sure he will figure it out. He is a pretty smart guy.

                        OK Im about to get down to business. I have had school all this week so this was the first day I could check it out.

                        From what yall said. Im going to check the batteries first with a volt meter, then if all is well there check the alternator.

                        Ill let you know how it works out

                            The amps will determine how well the starter can spin the engine and for how long. A starter will generally draw about 300-400 amps, thus an 800 CCA battery can turn the starter twice as long as a 400 CCA battery. The voltage drop in either case will be around 3v. A drained battery will lose CCA and voltage. The engine could be turning over, but if the volts aren't there the electronics won't fire the ignition.

                              OK I checked out the alternator at idle (cuz thats all I can do) and it still looks like its putting out 12v. So Im at a loss for ideas now.

                              Any Ideas? The boat is still in limp mode....
