the shifter aperantly striped the pin bearings so the dealer says that it is shot. the boat is a 2003 21 i with 160 hrs. The problem is it is striped so bad that it will not trip the neutral saftey switch. also aftermarket will not work because of the taps switch.SO FOR THE PRICE OF 20 SHIFTERS I PAY OFF MY BOAT JUST DONT SEEM RIGHT

The TAPS switch could be replaced with a dash mounted rocker switch. I think the switch is a simple ON-OFF-ON.
Our throttle/shifter is a Morse MV-2, w/o neutral safety switch (NSS is trans mounted), with trim control option.
Does your look like this: http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MV2
Haven't seen any for sale with the trim switch option. Probably special ordered by Tige. Teleflex might have a replacement.

Wouldn't a standard I/O shifter have the "Trim" button for the outdrive on it? My last I/O (2004) did.

I think a lot of I/O's or straight outboards have that on the throttle for trim or for lowering and raising the motor.

What disposable income? No one told me this. I work just to pay for my boat and my gas and for the truck to haul it. Any fixings comes out of the gas fund. Luckly our winters are very long so I can save all winter for summer gas.

If you have a Velvet Drive trans the NSS is on the right side of the trans on the same shaft as the shift lever arm which is on the left.
The NSS in a throttle/shifter would not be needed at all, so just don't hook it up.
I've been searching the net for an MV-2 with the trim switch in the knob, but so far have not found one. Makes sense to me the trim switch on the knob should have been available in the Morse line. Our last boat was an I/O, but it had a dash mounted trim switch.

Because this is not the norm what does the dealer say caused the failure, and is there no machine shop available that could fix shifter for less?
