If they are electic brakes you can install the brake controler that you put in the cab of the truck and adjust the gain or the amount of pressure the trailer brakes apply as to the truck brakes. If they are drum brakes you can also adjust the pressure on each drum. This is a pain to get all four in tune with each other. I will give you the details to adjust drum brakes if needed.

Is this thread a reason to go with electric brakes if given the choice? Any downsides to electric? I assume cost.

Didn't realize trailers were coming with discs now, I guess that is one of the many differences in the newer boats.

Standard electric brakes are cheap, but I'm not sure they work with disks. However, these brakes use an electromagnet at each wheel to active the shoes. I'm not sure that's a good combination for a system that routinely gets submerged in water. Electric over hydraulic sounds like a great solution.

One downside to electric brakes is the need to have a battery to activate the brakes in a trailer breakaway event.

I really like electric brakes for the adjustment and control they give.

Electric drum brakes are the same cost as regular hydraulic disc brakes. The manufacturers won't charge you more when ordering the trailer. Electric over hydraulic however is about $1500 more in most cases. Also most OEM brake controllers won't work w/ electric over hydraulic units. I know my dad's 08' F250 won't and my 08' 2500HD won't. Kind of sucks have an OEM brake controller thats nicely integrated so you don't gotta have that ugly box, only to find out you can't use it.

I do wish you could order regular electric brakes w/ discs though.

                Sledhead54,
If you have a drop hitch it might help to get a ball mount with slightly less drop. This will put less gravity load on the surge coupler.
