    surge brakes

Im having problems burning brakes on steep grades even when I use only my tran and engine to keep at the right speeds. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of surge brakes or is this a typical problem with tige trailers. I ahve never had this problem before with other boats.

Tige does not manufacture their own trailers so it will depend on which trailer brand you have.

I've contemplated rigging a switch to activate the trailer's backup lights and thereby disable the trailer brakes when headed down a long slow hill to the lake. I too have had the brakes on my "Sport Boat" trailer get real hot on such downhills. They're fine for normal driving and I wouldn't want to loosen them.

I think boat trailers typically have drum brakes, they are meant to assist in stopping not to withstand the entire load like disc brakes. I could be wrong. If they are hydraulic motion activated brakes I don't think you can do much about it. The switch would probably work with electric brakes though.

This very reason is why I ordered eletric brakes for the new trailer

I had that problem on "wolf creek pass coming down the other side"
I think there is a pin that disables the compression part. Then you have
no breaks. Mine got so hot, I blew the grease caps.

It surprised me when I saw mine had 4 wheel disc brakes too.

Just got back from a long trip. Coming down the Grapevine brakes got hot and blew the grease caps off. My trailer is a VM trailer with surge disc brakes on the front axle. Have had the boat for 5 years and this was the first problem.

E/H pump assembly is really not that much more $$. You can get one for about 500-600, when you compare that to the price of mechanical surge coupler it is not really that much more $$. Granted you need a controller in the truck and that is 40-100 depending on what you get. I have a pretty decent controller in my truck and when I have towed trailers with electric brakes recently the braking performance between that and surge is night and day. All my future trailers will have E/H for sure. But I have to admit, I sorta brake issues, I love 'em. Currently I have SS disks everywhere, you can never have too good of brakes. The way I look at it a good set of brakes costs about the same as my insurance deductible and the first time somebody pulled out in front of me in the rain and everything was sliding, (and I didn't hit them) I was happy with the extra $$ spent.
