We use an 02 Explorer with the 4.0L V-6. It tows our 22i just fine given its 7000lb rating. Most on here have overkill and then some.
I tow our 22i with an Infiniti QX56 and before that we used a Expedition.

It is "overkill" as far as the tow rating (8,900lbs).

You are correct in that it is the stopping that is important so that is why I don't just look at the tow rating rather I am interested in the weight of the vehicle vs. what is being towed.

I would only be comfortable if the tow vehicle is heavier than the boat.

    QX56 weights 6,000lbs.

We often drive from Vancouver to Lake Shasta and I would only feel comfortable spending 12 hrs on I5 with the QX or similiarly large tow vehicles.

It's overkill until you do a LOT of towing with it and then stuff starts breaking or wearing out prematurely because it was never designed to be used that much that close to capacity.

Just depends on where you live, the roads you will be towing on and the distance. For me a few 110 mile round trips a week up and down hills at 70-75mph at 5,280' of elevation took its toll on my Avalanche. First the tranny went out and then the power steering pump, then the brakes, etc, etc. I didn't need a diesel but it sure is nice to tow my boat at 75 mph in 6th gear going up a hill like its nothing.

When there was a RZ4 it was pulled by a Ford Excursion with the 7.3L PSD.

Just added air springs in the back to help with some sag. Thing rides 10x better.

I had a '91 Explorer that literally ate front brakes and calipers throughout the 243K miles I had it. Maybe the later ones got bigger brakes.

I made the dumba.. decision to tow my '89 Mustang with that Explorer over Pacheco Pass to Laguna Seca on a car trailer that didn't have brakes. It was all I could do to keep it below 60 MPH going down that hill.

Some vehicles, like my Dodge truck, have underrated towing capabilities, others, like my Explorer, I'd say are overrated in that dept. I couldn't imagine towing 7K lbs with that Explorer, even if the trailer did have brakes.

I'm now all for overkill with a tow vehicle (and for properly braked trailers). The thing about boating is that we typically have both family and friends in the tow vehicle. Its not worth the potential issues.

Still leaning towards the RZ2.. but just curious. thx.
I have an 8.1l Surburban, but I have towed it just fine with my 5.3l Tahoe....

And just because you can, doesn't mean you should! Just make sure you aren't exceeding the tow ratings because your insurance company is likely to laugh at you if something happens and you've gone over the max rating.
x2^^^^ I would be more worried about stopping then going!

On a Powell trip on June comming back to Phoenix it is about 105 degrees and there are some large grades to go up and down. Phoenix to Flagstaff is about a 6000ft elevation change then from Flastaff to Powell to Page it is about 3000 feet. Here are the results of that day.

                Denali w/6.0 - Overheated Engine
Jeep Cammander w/Hemi - Overheated Transmission
Excursion w/ PSD - No Problems, just my complaints about the shortage of gears in the 4r100 tranmission. 6 speeds would be nice.

Some people think it may be overkill, but I have seen SUVs with ample towing capacities crimpled on Powell trips.

I prefer safer speeds and less aggressive driving.

Yeah, the speed limit is 75 and if you go any less you get some flack for it. I'm not an aggressive driver by any means.

I have an '08 RZ4 and tow it w/ an '08 V8 Jeep Commander. Works just fine--towing capacity for the car w/ the tow package I have is 6,000lbs and the boat weighs 4,500lbs, so even w/ a full tank of gas, I'm well under the limit. I think that's the question u need the answer to--what is max towing capacity for the particular mid-size SUV u are thinking about with the particular tow package u r thinking about.

I think you forgot to add the weight of the trailer Plus all the other gear in the boat, plus people and gear in the SUV. Dude, you are pushing it

It's funny, on a side note........ I've seen slalom boats pulled with cars like a camaro, station wagon, ranger and a mustang. Funny what people will pull with. I know the slalom boats don't weigh as much but it just looks silly.

u think so? one thing i mis-remembered b/c u made me nervous, so i checked it--'08 Jeep Commander v8 towing capacity is 7,200lbs, not 6,000. So that certainly makes me breathe a little easier...I don't tow it very far--ramp is a mile away. Haven't had any issues...
