My 2 weeks at Lake Powell

I spent two weeks down at Powell - The first week was out of Bullfrog with the family and the second week was at Antelope Point with our Venture Crew.

The water was still rising 9-13 inches a day at Bullfrog. We went up to Knowles Canyon and the water was very muddy and tons of debris. It was also fairly cold water for Lake Powell. We had an amazing thing happen in the canyon where the houseboat was. A giant slab of the cliff (150 tall 50 feet wide and about 12 feet thick) broke off and fell into the lake in the morning. I was in my boat coming back from Good Hope Bay. I have never ran out of gas before, but I ran out right at the mouth of our canyon. We were paddling back to the houseboat, when another boat in our party was just coming out. As we rounded the corner, we saw a big heap of smoking rocks next to the cliff. They saw it start to fall and watched for a few seconds -- about 6 feet of water receded from around the house boat and then a 6-8 foot wave came towards the houseboat off to the side, a bigger wave went out straight from the cliff. Our friend jumped into his Malibu and untied it from the houseboat as he went up and over the wave, he couldn't see the houseboat over the water. It rocked the houseboat up and down but everybody was fine. If we had not ran out of gas, we would have been right in front of the cliff when it fell. The rocks would have probably missed us, but who knows what the bigger wave would have done to us. I think the big guy upstairs was watching out for us.

Our friend took a movie pic of it before she got all the kids in the houseboat. I will try to get a copy posted up here.

Here is picture of it after it fell. It's hard to see the scale but the white line is about 50 feet above the water:

Here is some other shots of a good time:

      Look at the concentration:

      Even the channel was glass:

For you purists, yes, we tubed!

The night started out very dark with a ton of stars, but around 4:00 am a full moon would pop out:

      Nice sunsets:

In addition to wakeboarding, wakesurfing, I also got one ski run in on glass in Good Hope Bay - There was nobody up there because of gas prices:

The last night we stayed in the slip in bullfrog bay:

        Week 2 with the Ventures

We had 16 boys and 5 leaders. Our trip started up Navajo Canyon, but there was so much debris that we decided to move to Warm Creek. Here is picture of the debris that got blown in the morning:

The owner of the houseboat only had 3 lines. We tied two on the side where the wind was blowing in the afternoon, but the wind shifted and the houseboat broke lose. The owner was at the marina and we couldn't figure out the magic formula to start his boat, so we all had to jump in and pull the boat back on shore, it was a little hairy:

The water was nice in the morning:

        Some nice wipe outs:

There were plenty of lizards to be caught:

        As well as trash fish:

        Cliffs to climb:

Second camp with one of the leaders new Air Nautique - No key, it used an electronic keypad:

        Eating:

        More tubing:

And wakesurfing - One of the adults had never tried it - He said that when he got up and the music turned up, he got the chills and knew he had to buy a V-drive Here is one of the boy's first time:

Items sacrificied to the Lake Powell Gods:
        1. My sunglasses jumping in to save the houseboat
        2. My daughters glasses when she didn't take them off to go tubing
        3. My anchor - No comment
        4. Sleeping bag and pillow blown into the lake
        5. Thousands of dollars of gas
        6. Wonderful memories

Looks like definately good times. Moki, how long were you home between trips? I am at Antelope the 19th to the 23rd, then to Zions the 23rd to the 27th, then at Bullfrog the 29th through the 2nd of August. I am afraid if I come home between I may not get back for the last trip. I bet the work has piled up for you at home. Good luck getting back on top of things. I am glad you ran out of gas, do you remember that couple was killed I think it was last year by a falling slab.

Lost anchor - Was it not tied to the boat?

Moki, glad you had a great time. It's good to ski the kids and you (skiing) enjoying themselves.

Just remember where your anchor got lost and go back when the water is down again.
