Karoshi - die from overworking.
Three kanji characters: The first character, ka, means to exceed or overdo. The second character, rou (long O), is used for laboring or toiling (and also used in the words for trouble, pain, and work-related injury or death: roudousaigai). The third, shi is used for death.

My cousin died from washing the windows on home. The fall, 6 feet, broke his neck, left behind a wife and small child. My point is this, you get one shot at life, and living in fear of riding in the wake, should be the least of them. Be smart about it. Pickup "The Book" series, pay attention to the techniques taught, go out practice what they teach, and have some fun already. I've seen (a) ACL go on wakesurfer as well-don't kid yourself. Rider tries to keep the board under him, twist his knee tryin to save some junk run, thanks for coming-next.
You can get hurt or die everyday of your life-in everything you do. Embrace that, and you'll have a much better time with it. I'd rather take good roll behind my rig, than a fall from a ladder, washing some lame crappy windows that the wife wants done.
Besides, chics dig scars, and canes are cool..........“Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy &#*! what a ride!”

Sorry, I forgot to aid your original question. Ballast? When you "setup" to surf, you only want the "side" your riding to have the lb's. Figure out, what you are, goofy or regular, and fill that side only. If you have an extra bag, lead, etc, move them all to that corner of the cockpit. If you have extra bodies on the boat, they all move to that corner as well. The object is to sink the side, you will be riding behind. This creates a bigger curl, which means a nicer sweetspot, which means more fun. Make sure you have a SURF rope as well, don't cheat here, because a large handle can injure the rider, rather easy actually.
Have fun too. Always smile, and make sure you have a nice cold beverage waiting for the transfer to use while surfin. This makes a great photo-op.“Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy &#*! what a ride!”
