dolphin sighting

Last night we decided to take the boat out for a cruise after dinner and while heading down the inter-coastal we saw a pair of dolphins playing in the distance. We idled up to where they where and turned the motor off to let the kids watch them for awhile. After about 10 minutes they started getting closer to the boat when all of the sudden while everyone was leaning over the bow, one of them pops its head out of the water and just looks at the kids for and then turns around and slaps its flipper against the water soaking everyone. Needless to say this made my daughters summer.

I'm just loving this S. Florida move and living right on the water. So much better than Memphis and the 1 1/2 hour drive to use the boat.

when were wakeboarding the the creek by my old house sometimes dophlins will appear and hang out. never gotten that close tho. bet it was pretty cool

I bet you're glad you kept the boat now aren't ya?!?!? What's really cool, and I'm sure it will happen eventually, is when the dolphins come up right behind the boat to play in the wake. They love the pressure created under water by the boat going over, it makes them more buoyant and and pop to the surface faster. Once they find this pressure they will usually stay with it and play a while, if you bring the throttle back just a little and make the wake a bit bigger they will really play. My wife was landing a wake to wake not too long ago and had a dolphin jump out of the wake face not 3' from her, freaked her out and made us all go crazy. Eventually the dolphins will get routine, but manatees are a little rarer, you will see those eventually too. Another cool thing is a big eagle ray jumping, they make a huge splash when they land, since they are the size of an area rug. I'm glad you're having fun.

I missed the part about not having a 1.5 hour drive, couldn't agree with you more, if I have to drive more than 15 minutes to launch the boat I get frustrated. Here's some of my dolphin pics. They regularly get 10-20', visitors always love it.

In the old times, when boat captains saw dolphins, it was a sign of luck and that shore was close. That must have been a great experience that your children will never forget.

What an experience. Now your kids will never let you get rid of the boat. That would be one way to get the family to go boating more often.

No dolphins, But we have wakeboarded next to otters and have had beavers try to dam our cove where we do all of our riding.

this spring i had just fallen wakeboarding in the Willamette river, when something big bumped me, then popped its head our of the water... sea lion. i almost shat myself. glad he didn't think i was a salmon.

it would have been awsome had it been a dolfin. Sweet!!!
