So last night we took out my new RZ4 (I'll post pics pics soon) we had the stereo turned up quite loud and all of the sudden the speakers in the boat and the sub started to cut in and out and then just stopped. The tower speakers kept working. The wierd thing is that the protection light was not on and there was a smell coming from the sub, but not the amp. Would a blown sub cause all of the other speakers not to work since they share an amp? My buddy at the marina is going to check on it later today to see if it works today, but i am somewhat dissappointed that it did that on our first day out.

Sounds like you blew the sub. With a blown speaker, it will usually cause the amp to go into protection. Since the in boats and sub is on a 5 ch amp. That is why those stopped working The towers are on a sep amp.
Unplug the sub wires and see if the in boats come back on and the amp goes out of protection.
You have to hear what the distortion sounds like. (clipping) Many can hear it on highs but not as much on subs. Sorry to hear it happend on the first day out. Usually once you have had some time with the system, you will know where to limits are.

Check out our XS12. One thing to remember is the factory sub is a free air woofer. So putting the XS10 FA in a box or stepping up to the XS12 in a box will give you more power handling and output. As when running in free air, you are using the cavity as the enclosure. So when you put stuff in there for storage, you are changing the air space for that woofer. I feel that our woofer is the best free air woofer on the market but there are still limits of any free air application. Plus it sounds like you are used to a bigger woofer which is what you had on your last boat. So after saying all that. It is not the woofer!! I have had guys change out W7 and L7 woofers for our XS-XXX and have given me feedback that they are happier with our XXX woofer. Also had a dealer tell me the XS12 is hands down the best marine woofer he has ever heard. It really sounds like you are just needing more bass than what a factory system is designed to provide.

Like tim said, sounds like you blew the sub. Which was probably due to a clipped signal, as tim said. It wasn't the particular brand of sub, it was the fact that you were clipping the signal. No matter what type of sub you had in there, it would have probably blown.
You need to adjust your gains properly. Personally I like to do it with an O scope. I'm gonna venture to say that you probably don't have one, as most don't. BUT I would bet your local high end stereo store does! Ask them to help you set your gains using it.... you'll also figure out where the max you can take your volume level is by this.Being a major OU fan and a staunch conservative.... thanks for the imput guys. I'll checkout what else wetsounds has to offer. The first thing i noticed about this new stereo is that the sub was freeair. But yeah i will definately have to upgrade because we usually like a lot more than factory bass. But like i said earlier, the speakers are amazing, especially on the tower. It is a huge step up from the '06 tower of power option, we can actually hear the music out on the water now. Awesome job by wetsounds.Tige Throws Mad Wake.

First trip out huh? Sounds like us, but we only had the clarion sub that was the high end in 2005.
Just to be devil's advocate, what do you-all think of the jl marine sub, it's a free-air design. I put one in my boat and am really happy with it, running it with their sub specific marine amp. When I bought it someone on WW had a computer program of some sort that he put the spec in and compared it with a couple other competition level subs and he said according to the program, it would produce some pretty amazing output. I do like the look of the wetsounds stuff, I prefer the dark enclosures to the white clarion/jl/infinity stuff

oh yeah clarion subs suck. The marina is going to cover it tho, they are pretty good about taking care of us, especialy since i used to work there and we've been dealing with them for about 15 years and they've been open 20. I don't have any experience with JL audio marine, but i know their car stuff is really good. I agree that the dark stuff is better than the white stuff, it looks better and doesn't show dirt at all. On my dad's searay, the fiberglass has yellowed more than the clarion speakers and they are way different shades of white now, a problem you don't have with dark speakers.Tige Throws Mad Wake.

Personally I hate JL's crap and will never use one of their subs. I'm not sure if they're marine subs use this (doubtful) but who designs a world class sub, yet uses foam surrounds????Being a major OU fan and a staunch conservative....
