Lake Mcconaughy (Nebraska) Questions

Ok! Are the ramps pretty busy or few and far between? Sorry for all of the questions, we're just trying to sort out all of the misc ramblings we have heard 3rd person and haven't actually talked to anyone who's been there recently.

There is generally no wait for the ramp, but on a busy weekend i've seen it backed up. But then you can find a tractor to load your boat for you for $20.

Diesel - Sorry, we hit Glendo last weekend (yes I will post pics). :-) We were also going to do Lake Mac over the 4th, but decided against it.

How is Lake Mac with no coves? Can you find smooth water?



We found some amazing water (In Glendo). We had to drive through the first canyon, then found a 2nd one, and on the other side of that one was a lake about the size of cherry creek. We were the only boat in there moving (there was one fishing).

We went to glendo and that particular weekend it was oceanic swells in the lake, but we were able to find a sweet canyon where the water was great. Their are not many boats on Mac, so its easy to find an area to ride. I dont think there are coves, but I may be wrong. We always find a good spot on the lake to ride.

I was really considering going to Glendo with some friends from work, but its been a tradition with my college buddies to go to Lake Navaho and camp. We are going from that Wednesday to Sunday if anyone else happens to be there. We'll have three boats, plus a pontoon.

What I do not like about Glendo is how they put up the barrier to load/unload your boat. so you do not even have an option but go to the ramp. When we were there the water was unbelieveably rough at the ramp. we unloaded and water was dumping in the boat from the front and back. But both Glendo and Macaunahay are going to have their good weather days and their bad.

My wife isn't a camper, so I don't mind using the boat ramps, but I can understand how much easier it would be to drop the boat into the water at your campsite.

Diesel - What is Navaho like? How long is the drive?

Samw - I wish it were closer too. It's a 3.5 hour drive for me, and when you add in all the stops it took almost 5 hours. We had to stop for Lunch/Dinner both ways.

Navaho is ~6 hr drive. Rough with todays fuel prices and towing fuel economy. Navaho is know as mini lake Powell. Powell is my favorite lake and Navaho no where compares, but it is a large lake with lots of coves and canyons/cliffs.

I am pretty sure we were here (see pink circle). The water was only 5-6 feet deep. It was amazing. The shores were land (not rock), and there were a bunch of cows on the shore too.

We were told the lake was 100% full, plus it had an additional 10% flood retention.

Oh yeah, I made it that far before and it was only 2' deep last year! Scared the crap out of me when I saw cows on the side and then look down and could see the bottom of the lake.

My wife has a thing for cows, she thinks they are cute. It was funny skiing by them. The water back there was amazing!

It makes me wish I lived closer to a lake like that. Or even better, having my house on a private lake.
