Stupid core/casting/freeze plug popped out this Sat. morning. Happened to be the one directly underneath the motor mount! What a B!!CH! It sucked getting this sucker back in to continue our weekend... while stuck in the middle of the lake. Luckily I was able to get the sucker in there really snug and it held all weekend. Guess it's off to my buddy's race shop to lift the motor out and somehow get this one back out and pop a new one in.
Now the story:
After about 1 min on the water, the motor sputtered and I lost power. I had been monitoring my temp guage closely, as It's getting close to time for a new impeller and I didn't do it just yet cause it still looks perfect, but it never got above 100* in that short of time. I had caught a smell, so I opened the hatch and smoke/steam bellowed out. Thought to myself... CRAP, there goes the damn heads and exhaust manifold. Compartment was full of water. Noticed one of the hoses had blew off the exhaust manifold... turned out the clamps had been loosened by SOMEONE and never got put back on. So fixed that once things cooled down. While waiting, I crawled in and popped the impeller housing... impeller was in perfect shape still. So figured water was just coming from this hose. Checked the rest of the hoses and found two more clamps completely loose. Waited for the bilge to get the rest of the water out, Crossed my fingers, and fired up the boat. Got that psuedo supercharger whine that we all love, and cheered. Started to go while having a buddy watch for water shooting out. He yelled stop. Water was still shooting in somewhere. I'm thinking crap, for sure the block is cracked, but yet there was no water in the oil. Crawl in there, and he said, hey I thought I saw a casting plug floating around earlier... thought it was something else. Tracked down the water, and sure enough, the plug was missing. Found the plug and contemplated how in the hell I was gonna get it back in. Somehow managed to get it back in, and it held thank god. Boat ran great the rest of the weekend. But I was definately nervous. Was watching the temp guage like a hawk, and kept having a buddy pop the hatch and watch for leaks every 4 or 5 mins. Kind of sucked being nervous while running the boat.
I've had these plugs pop out on cars before, just wish they didn't wear out like this. And no, it wasn't out from freezing as the boat had ran fine before this, after de-winterizing. In fact I don't think I've ever seen one of these plugs ever actually pop from freezing. Thank god, I carry tools on the boat!
