Can this really effect gas prices?

I got one of those multi-forwarded emails this morning(I'm sure alot of you have recieved a similar one) asking me to stop purchasing gas from the Shell & Exxon/Esso. The theory is that if we stop buying from the world's two largest oil producers that they will start to lower gas prices. I usually always ignore these kinds of emails, but with prices now @ $1.40/litre here in Canada, it may be the time to start trying out these theories. Seeing as we all obviously have to drive gas guzzlers to get our gas guzzling boats to the lake, we have the ability to help test this theory, due to the fact we probably consume about twice as much gas as the Average Joe that drives a Honda Hybrid and no boat. And just to put it out there, I'm by no means a flag waving tree hugger, in fact my family is all employed by the oil industry, it's just that i'm not sure a 2nd mortage to pay for gas this summer is a smart move. What do you guys think?

I never buy gas from the big oil companies at least at there post advertised stations. I bet that the little mom and pop shops buy there gas from them though. So either way they are getting there money.

I do see a benefit to this though. We would be supporting the mom and pop shops that need our support the most to stay in business since they are fighting with the big franchised and company owned Mobil, Texaco and Exxon Stations.

I only buy from Exxon/Shell/Chevron because I'm a communist that loves big oil...... , or because my Fleet Gas Card (oh I love that) only works at the major gas stations........
