    Replace??

Guys, should this housing be replaced with every impeller change? I have read up on this before, but this one is in great shape, except for a small nick in the gasket, no scoring at all on the inside. Thanks.

No, but should be inspected closely when impeller is replaced. Look for scoring, grooves, and discoloration.

Just the impeller. I've got one hanging half way out of the housing. I gave up for the night, after I smalled my wrist into the front of the crankshaft bolts, 4 times. I should have just waited til the damn thing failed.

If it's the plastic housing, My local dealer recomends replacing it every time, due to our silty waters. If it's the metal housing, you only need to replace it due to obvious wear marks. ALWAYS replace the "O" ring and gasket no matter which one you have.

            jacques2727,

I replaced mine this year. I don't have any pics here at work but I will look tonight to see how my housing looked compared to yours. As I am looking at it now I think for the money I would change it. I will PM you some info on who to contact about it. You get everything you need. NOTE: you only need that half, you don't need the pulley end if it is not bent.

As far as changing the impeller: here is what I did. I used a shoe string and tied it around the bottom end of the impeller. NOTE: the impeller should be dry at this point.....(chpthril - told me to get some oring lube and I don't remember the name, I will take a pic of that tonight) I lubed up the inside the house w/ a good bit of the lube and the impeller slipped right in. I put the entire housing together one night while the race was on. I have picture of the impeller in the housing just so I know what direction the fins should be. The next day mounted the unit in the boat, took about 1 1/2 hours w/ the TV on.

For me, the whole kit is not a whole lot more expensive than the impeller, so I change everything; but if it is in good shape, you should be fine. I use a zip tie and KY lubricant to get the impeller in--but everything boils down to sex for me

I would just change the impeller. Buy the whole kit next year and replace it all. I just finished mine about 20 mins ago.

I'll agree you dont need to replace the metal one unless of wear or scores...Whats the discoloration from chp? Always replace the gaskets or O rings or whatever they are. We use Vasoline to ease the impeller in

They get and turn blue from running dry. This can lead to an out-of-round housing.

Thanks for the advice guys. So I just replaced the impeller this go round, but have ordered the kit for the next time. Very easy job to do, but I did have some explaining to do when the wife found the KY on the workbench. Thanks again for the help!!

If the housing looks good, I would wait and replace it next year. Just replace the impeller for now.
