just got the april 08 waterski magazine. the article about MC and the VW diesel is crazy. it claims up to 40% better fuel economy. ok thats great and then THE BIG ONE!!!!!!!!!! COST TO UPGRADE TO DIESEL ENGINE $32,500.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont claim to be a math wiz but you would have to burn some serious gallons for that to pay off.

Just did the math (think I didnt it right not sure)and in order to break even you would have to burn 44,520 gallons of diesel to break even. with 5 Gallons per hour. thats 8,904 hours on the boat.......

what was your formula? You would need to know how your gph would improve over gas--then calculate the difference in price between gas and diesel......basically find the true cost of diesel vs gas before you can calculate the cost/benefit right?

Someone is back there on a wakeboard is smelling that diesel exhaust.
On Lake Havasu unless its equiv to CARB 6 emissions, ya won't be anchoring it in the channel or anyplace close to the docks or beaches near town.

Lake Tahoe, forget it, ya won't even be able to launch it.

Decrease the cost to own because the engine depreciates much less than a gasoline engine--better resale price on the boat.

They are expensive now because they are new. Wait 5 years and they will be more realistic....like a Playstation 2 when it's first out is 3x the "real" price.

Here in WI, diesel is 12.5-15% more expensive so a 40% reduction is a net fuel savings of about 25%. That's a lot of savings IMHO. If it's truly that efficient and the smell/pollution and noise were inline with a gas engine, I'd pay a bit of a premium for a diesel engine. Not 32k though!!
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

I know I did it wrong ha but either way its a lot. I did as if you were to burn 40% less Diesel. so Gas price minus the 60% price of diesel. then calculated how many gallons it would take to get to 32,500

                        Used Duramax motor - $8K

Manifolds, ECM adapter, and V drive plate from PPE - $2500

Blowing up your Walter V-drive b/c it won't handle the torque - Priceless

I still wanna know what V-drive unit and transmission all the guys are running. When I spoke w/ Walter about the unit you'd need to handle the torque of a stock duramax, they said you'd never fit the unit you'd need into a tige. No way, no how.
Being a major OU fan and a staunch conservative.... I am perpetually vexed w/ the conundrum of who to hate more. Obama or the Univ. of Saxet.

You couldn't pay me to put one in my boat - even if you did it for free.

If you go out houseboating for a week, where are you going to get your diesel? Heck, you can't even get premium at Lake Shasta! At least if its there, I've never found it.
