Fentanyl is an incredibly potent narcotic painkiller. It is not long acting, or you would not need it every 3 hours.

Obviously you know not to share your meds with anyone, especially at that dose. The dose that releives your pain would put someone else to sleep, permanently.
    Be excellent to one another.

My mom is a very physically fit, beautiful 52yr old woman that has been plagued by cluster headaches for a long time. She used to be laid out by these headaches, and for years she thought they were really really really bad migraines. She went to a specialist in Nashville, TN and they did some tests (PET, Nuc, MRI, CT.....I don't know which one) but they found over time that the cluster headaches actually scarred her brain, so they are serious. My mom is not a earthy, granola woman....she is very professional and cosmo....that being said she has found 100% relief with the use of acupuncture. I balked at the idea, saying that it was a waste of time, but it works for her and she didn't believe in acupuncture before getting so desperate that she finally tried. I believe that she also is taking Cherry, well some fruit seed oil???? I'm not sure what it is, but my point is that she has been able to defeat the clusters in a unique way. Perhaps you should research some alternatives to pain meds.

Anyway, I do know (not personally) that those headaches are horrible and I hope you find some relief.

da you are correct, I suffer from crushing cluster headache attacks that occur every few hours. Triptans like Imitrex,Maxalt and other migraine meds used on a long term basis as emergency drugs up to 10 times a day were causing some very adverse affects on my heart so my Neuro put me on fentanyl for the pain a couple of years ago because of the number of attacks I get a day. The fentanyl helps but not all the way and it has adverse affects on simple things like breathing.

I was at 600mcg every 3 hours but because of its affect on my breathing and windage I am pulling dosage back (under physician care) now to 400mcg every three hours and have added 10-15mg of methadone two - 3 times daily to help deal with head and fentanyl withdrawal. I hope to be off fentanyl in a few months.

I would not wish these clusters on anyone. I have had them for 8 years now and things that used to work I have built up tolerances for so many times now is grin and bear it to deal with clusters.

This is nothing compared to what Sean if fighting every day so lets concentrate on him and continue with our hopes and prayers for him.

            Jim

talltigeguy I may be wrong on the long acting issue but that is what my research found a few years ago when I looked at the pros and cons of yet another med over my long history of clusters. I guess long acting is relative to how long they help you with pain. The fentanyl pops I use are locked in my study for safety but my daughters are very versed in my cluster history and the family knows not to use my drugs.

Sparky I have tried many treatments includinng acupuncture when I was a walking zombie on all the crap the Neuro's were feeding me. Because I could not break the pain/med cycle for any amount of time accupuncture and other therapies did not help. I am glad you mom is no longer a clusterhead. That is great.

I'm happy for her too, she is really a different person. Hopefully you will find something soon to fix it not remedy it.
Best of luck with that bro, you'll find something soon, they are making all kinds of advancements daily in medicine.
Perhaps a brand spanking new RZ2 will do the trick

                        You can jump for Joy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is great news everyone. Please read comments from Seans work supervisor from Conoco.

The "sleeper has awakened"! For those of you who are not David Lynch fans (from the movie "Dune"), Sean is now awake and out of the heavy sedation. They began bringing him out last evening and as of this evening, he is awake and aware.

This is great news and Seans Mom is very excited. Sean is able to communicate with her and the medical staff. He cannot talk (due to the tracheotomy); however, he can write with his left hand. He has control of a marker and the remote control (television). An attending physician was able to discuss Sean's condition with him earlier today.
In addition, his nurse Alice, discussed in great detail his condition.
He is aware that his right leg was removed. He wasn't aware that he was in Stanford (he thought he was still in Bakersfield); however, he is now aware that he is in the Bay Area.

His pain level is lower than I would've thought. From a scale of 1-10, he indicated he was at 3 to 4. Additional good news is that he can now communicate to the staff on where he hurts and how bad it is. This is early and there is still a long way to go; however, this is a very significant step in Sean's recovery.

He did request to see Cornelius a co-worker since he knew he was in the Bay Area. I talked with Corn this evening and he will be working with Seans Mom on an appropriate time to visit with Sean.

We're all looking forward to visiting with Sean and the time when we can begin scheduling visits. It is still early but this will be the next step.

You see, your prayers and notes of encouragement are now evidence of what can happen. Thanks to all of you and keep them coming.

More updates to come. Have a great evening with your family
