    BAD DAY !!!

well i took out the boat this weekend and knew my batteries were a little low so i picked up two orbital gell filled batteries at the store and changed them at the dock. boat started fine and ran great. about 4 hours later all of a sudden click click click when i went to start the boat. long story short got towed in and took one of the other batteries that i took out earlier and hooked the jumper cables to the relay battery. nothing.... so i hooked it to the other battery and it cranked right up. put the boat in neutral and reved it up. the gauge red 12 volts when running high rpms. when idleing only about 11 or 10. loaded it up on the trailer but while still backed in the water and turned it off. it crank right up. did this a few times. so what do you think might be wrond. did i hook the batteries up wrong or something. we did play the radio all day but the boat never got turned off that many times. we did have a bunch of begginers first time wakeboarders with us so the boat never realy got ran at more than about 2000 rpms. and i dont have tower speakers . im just kind of stumped? i know this is prob in the wrong section but any help would be great.

sounds like your alt is bad. You should be at 12 volts when idling. also, if your batteries are low, it's not good for the alt to charge them. I was always told never to try and use an alt as a charger.

Did you have the perko switch on both batteries? this will spilt the charge and you won't get as good of a charge on them both so if one is week then it will bring the stronger one down.

ya i had both of them on. am i only supposed to have one on. my radio wont turn on unless the other is on i dont think. so when im running what should it be charging. i was thinking it should be a 13 and also what would make an alt be bad at 70 hours. tdid i do something wrong?

if your batts are low, then just leave it on one as that way that batt will get the full charge.

Your radio should play regardless of what switch it's on. Mine does.

When I had my stock alt before I put my system in at idle it was 12 and as soon as it got gas it was just over 13.

now with my new alt it's over 13 at idle.

i just went and checked. the ignition has to be on in order for the radio to work and the radio is hoocked to the secondary battery ? the only thing that i have hooked to the starting battery is the ballast. im realy confused. how is it supposed to be set up cause i think something isnt hooked up right. rawwwww ! frustration !!

I am not the genius here but something sounds hooked up wrong with what you describe here. First, I need to know, do you have the EDIB (or whatever) and do you have a Perko switch. Having lots of things hooked directly to the battery is not right. Usually, the only thing that goes to a battery is the automatic bilge pump (that way you don't turn it off and let the boat sink when you shut off all the batteries.

i would double check and make sure you have all the wires on and in the right place. sometimes they can fall back behind battery and you can miss one and it could cause you problems. just worth checking

did you add a second batt or was it done at the factory? is your ballast factory or add on?

im not sure what a edib is but i have two seperate perko type switches. one that controls the igintion i guess. ok here it goes. battery one that has the wire that runs to the starter has only ballast hooked to it. the other battery has the amp for the cabin speakers and some other typ stuff. the only thing that i see that might be wrong is that the rmote in the back of the boat is hooked to the starting battery. but as of yesterday the alt was only showing 11 volts at idkle and about 12 volt at 3000 rpms. i was just sitting still in neutral and reving it.

also im not sure if this matters but the key has to either be turned back or faward to play the raidion. the obviously have the remote wire hooked to the ignition

I'm wondering if the batteries might be defective. when you put them on a charger, do they consistently draw power no matter how long you charge them? This could be due to a short inside the battery itself.

Sounds like you have two issues.

                              1. Your alternator is not putting out. You should be between 13.6 and 14.4 depending on RPM at idle (and how much accessories you have on) and up to 15 or better while running wide open.

                              2. You MAY have something funny going on with the wiring. Care to expand on what you know about how it is connected?
