I have 2 trucks to pull. The 2002 Yukon XL 4x4 with 8.1L. This thing is a torque monster/tow beast. Will tow anything, doesn't even feel the Tige 24Ve much.
My other truck is a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 5.3L Vortec. It doesn't tow the Tige very well. Really struggles on hills, and even slight inclines. But I much rather drive it, unless I am with my whole family. It has the killer stereo, ipod connection, its raised, all the good stuff. My wife doesn't want me to do that stuff to her truck, the yukon.
So I have being doing some research over the last couple of months and I found this article which is no longer available on the internet. The article was from ChevyPerformance magazine. They did a baseline dyno, and then added 3 parts from granatelli motorsports which they dub the "Granatelli Pull Hard Kit." The kit is comprised of new near coil spark plug wires that are special 0 ohm resistance, new cold air intake kit, and new MAS airflow sensor tuned for the new air intake kit. All three are smog legal in 50 states, and bolt on. My dad and I did it in a couple of hours. According to the dyno, this will give you a 55 HP boost to the rear wheels and 65ft lb torque boost.
On top of that, I got the Big G tuner from Granatelli to reprogram the computer for better towing performance, which is supposed to give you an additional 20-30HP increase.
Did all three at once and the difference is amazing. It doesn't tow as well as the 8.1 obviously, but its night and day. I went up the siskiyou grade in southern oregon, which is as long and steep as the grapevine. 60-65 almost the whole way. At the very top, it got extra steep and traffic, I dropped to about 55. I was passing people the whole way home. When I towed the tige before, people were always passing me.
Anyway, for all you guys out there with Vortecs, looking for a bolt on boost, check out granatelli.
