That was the 1st time I've ever tried cross fit, and it's definately rough. I may start doing it once a week, to mix it up with my regular workouts. I hate cardio, but this keeps it interesting.

ok, so I used to be a really active guy, and never needed to "officially" work out. Then I got a desk job....and got old. I tried all sorts of stuff, situps, ran a marathon, etc. And while I lost a little when training for the marathon, I think I was actually putting on weight from muscle.

A couple of years ago, when I started to be embarrased to take my shirt off, I figured I was too old, and just sort of accepted it. Then a buddy of mine told me he was going to do a triathalon. He's 11 years older than me, and had a kidney transplant (17 years ago now) so he takes a bunch of drugs that hinder his endurance. I tend to be a little competitive, so I said ok, I'll give it a shot.

I have always been able to run, so I focused most of my ad-hock training on biking and swimming. 3 months, 2 triathalons later I had dropped 10 lbs.

The next year, I did 4 races and dropped 15. So far this year, I've done one duathalon, and have 7 more events coming this summer. My goal is to drop 20 lbs. That will put me at a reasonable 195.

What I've figured out, and I've read up on it too, so its not just me making this up, is that running will not necessarily help you lose weight. Yes it raises your metabolism, but for the most part, when you run your heart rate is too fast. You want it to be in the fitness zone, not the performance zone. For example, my max heart rate is supposed to be 185 bpm. My "fitness zone" is 130-148. My "performance zone" is 149-185.

Biking is way better because you spend most of your time in that "fitness zone". On a Sunday morning, my buddy and I will go out and put 40 miles on the bike, and we will typically burn around 2200-2400 calories. Find time to do that twice a week, and your in business. Also, swimming is one of the best overall exercises you can do. works your entire body and its cardio.

I'll stop blabbering now, and finish by saying this:
            1. go sign up for a race or something so you have a goal to work towards.
            2. get a heart rate monitor, so you know what "zone" you are in.
            3. get out there and burn some calories. Find someone you can compete against for motivation.

            Thats my

go buy Arnold's (the governator) book, "The Body Building Encyclopedia".
that will motivate you and is extremely useful on nutrition. It's not just a book on how to get big, it is really good and for anyone who just want's to get into shape. I swear buy it. I have always been the skinny guy. Friends call me skelator from he-man. ha ha. but i have used the workout plans from that book and in the last 2 months put on just over 10lbs of muscle, no supplements just using the diet tips and workouts from that book. There is my 2 cents.

I have not been on a "hardcore" exercise program or even a specific diet. It all started with a challenge to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks - 87 of us made the commitment and submitted our weight change each Monday by email. We had weekly suggestions on a blog form a local dietitian and nurse, but most off the the accountably was the driving motivator and it was free.

FYI - I am 5'9" and topped out at 248 lbs. just after Thanksgiving last year. I was tired of losing my breath to just to tie my shoes. I have gone from XXL shirts to L and 40" waist jeans to very loose 36". As of this morning I now weigh in at 198....so an even 50#, just under 2# per week avg. loss.

I have not cut out any specific groups, but have reduced my portions sizes by approx 1/3....I have eliminated sugar in my drinks and stay away from fried foods. I do some type of exercise for 30 minutes each each day - mainly walking, but also get on a weight machine or just do sit-ups the days I don't walk.

I will see if our blog spot is still up and post a link if anyone is interested. The program ended in March, but 12 of us have continued our weekly reporting. Just think of all the water displacement our boats would lose if this forum did a "group buy" weight loss program. You could justify more ballast...I got mine this week from Andrew.

CrossFit is great but painful. I have done the CrossFit workouts on and off for the better part of 3 years. I am in the process of cleaning up the diet and getting back into my cardio routine. I let my weight creep back over 235 and I have lost 5 so far. My main motivation was some killer chest pains recently and the barrage of test I am doing all because I got lazy and choose to not eat well. So far my ticker is in great shape but I have 2 more tests coming up today and next week (Electrocardiogram and a stress myoview). My goal is to lose 30 lbs for the long run and get back down between 215 and 220 in the next 8 weeks.
