    oil capacity

Does anyone know if the 5.7 engine block holds 5 quarts of oil, or is it more? I have a 2000 315 HP. I have an old version of that engine in an automobile engine, and it holds 5 quarts. I only ask because some of the newer v8's hold 7 quarts.

Mine holds about 5 even; I would add 4 and add a half quart until I had it full. I read my dipstick on the water, or in the drive with the boat level.

    Auto 350cid were usually 5 or 5.5 depending on pan size. I had a tahoe with 5.5, and a c/k with 5.

I started running Schaeffer's Moly Blend 40W this season. I'll see how it does.

07 22 Ve with MP 340, service tech from my dealer told me that mine only held 4.5. This arose from questions I had about consumption. Come to find out I was overfiling and thinking the engine was using more that I thought, based upon what I was draining out. I switched to synthetic on last change and not sure if that has helped. Best to add & check as you go to find out exactly the amount it holds.

I'd measure how much you took out and start there (assuming it was at a good level before you drained it). Just check the dipstick after adding the last few quarts and you'll be fine.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The next issue is figuring out the filter number. The filter on it is a fram, and it is a PH30. The AC Delco equivalent to that is a PF454. There is another AC Delco, the PH1218 or 1214, I can't remember which, that would fit as well. That second AC Delco filter is the filter on most 5.7 GM's of the late 90's and early 21st century. It appears that the filter that is on it was the filter for camaro's in the early to mid 90's. I'll probably just call Tige tommorrow to confirm.

You can also find a K&N to fit. I think the mobil1 number is 3322. Look up 1997 5.7L camaro or corvette. That's what fits mine.

Check it before you drain, put back the same amount you drain, plus what is needed to bring it up to the safe mark.

In other words, if it's low, and you drain 4qts, add 4qts plus enough to bring it back to full. If it shows full, and you only get 4qts out, fill with 4qts.

Dont forget the 1/2qt in the filter.

Spharis, the thing that I found weird is that two filters fit it, but holds more oil than the other.

There is a short and long filter that fits the 5.7L. If you've got the clearance, go with the long.
