Standley is nice... except you have to be a resident of Jeffco County (I think). They will "sell left over memberships to outsiders", but their are never leftovers.

Nope, no private lake for me, just Boyd Lake or Horsetooth Reservoir. Even when I worked in the Tech Center I would drive home to Thornton and then go up to Boyd in the evenings because Cherry Creek sucks so bad! Now I work in Loveland so I bring the boat with me and head over to Boyd after work.

With out Colorado we would not have Lake Powell, Mead, or Havisu so let it snow let snow. We need the snow. Sorry for you guys not being able to get out with your boats though that is the worst to get all set up and arrive to find out you cant get on the lake. I remember doing that as a kid at Flemming Gorge in Utah. My step father was crazy and launched on the beach because the ramp was still iced in. He almost got stuck with the boat when pulling it out. I would say he was lucky. Because if he had to leave the truck there with the boat, the truck and trailer would have been underwaters as the lake level rose. The boat we could have just tied it to the trailer with a long leader and let it float I guess. But he made it out after three hours of throwing tons on mud all over the boat and truck.

I'm all for it snowing in the mountains and it has been, I just don't want anymore down here! They are well above normal snowpack in the mountains so our lakes should be nice and full this year!

I guess that would get frustrating. Especially when you see us southern boys who take all your water and use it all year long. You can come down any time and your welcome to tow behind our boat.

Stanley is $700+ a year, and unless you live in one of the northern cities, they won't sell you a permit. I think 700 or so permits go to Thorton, 10 to Arvada, and 10 to Wheatridge (or Westminister). They always sell out too.

I took our I/O to Sloans last year several times. I think the permit is $415 if you don't live in Denver, and $215 if you do. It's around 3.5 feet of water, then a bunch of muck. Every once in a while there is a large rock. The water is decent on the weekends, and great during the week.

I grew up on Cherry Creek (WarZone), and now that we have kids, I knew it wasn't safe there and had to find another lake. Sloans does allow tubing, and it is pretty small, but it worked out great for us last year.

So, other then me being clueless, why can't you surf in 3.5 feet of water?

Mainly because your boat is going to ride lower in the water than you would wakeboarding and it needs to be able to create some downward force for that wake. If it's too shallow, the bottom starts coming into play.

I had a feeling, that was it, but wasn't sure.

How deep does the water need to be to surf?

                      thanks

I think you want a minimum of 10', but Surfdad could say for sure.

A pass to Standley Lake is actually $850. There are 510 passes for Westminster / Jeffco, 20 for Thornton and 20 for Northglenn residents. And yes there are a number of Tige’s on it. The lottery has already happened with about 40 people on the waiting list from the Westminster / Jeffco group. I agree about Chatfield on the weekends it is CRAZY. Can be very entertaining watching people at the boat ramp. Jackson can also be quite busy on the weekends but very nice during the week. Hope to see some of you out at the lake.

rnobbe - What is the water like at Stanley? I've never been on it.

I would love to find a large, smooth, quiet lake in the SE Denver metro area. Oh yea, I don't want it costing a lot of money too. Think I'm dreaming??

Parker is actually buiding a dam/lake. It is supposed to be 4 times the size of Cherry Creek, but they aren't going to let boats on it. I wish they would only let Parker residents on it, but being that it is reserves for drinking water, it's a no go for the boats.

The water is nice early in the day. On weekends it can get pretty ruff as it can get busy. The lake is about 90 feet deep near the dam. There are a lot of nice boats on the lake however a few of them need to learn how to drive. I was cut off while pulling my sons several times last year (not near as bad as Chatfield though). The lake is only about 1000 surface acres so it is not a huge lake. However it has a nice advantage of only being about 10 minutes from my house.

Good luck finding a nice quiet lake near Denver.

rnobbe - I think I'll need more then luck, I don't think one exsists. With that in mind, we will spend the weekends at Sloans again. :-)
