    Need Advice - 2001 23V

    Hello all,

I have a line on a 2001 23V with 315HP engine that I am very interested in purchasing. I know this site has a wealth of information regarding Tige's and was interested in knowing if there are any specific areas or items I should look into on the boat, especially for this model and year. This will be our first inboard so any and all information would be appreciated.

The boat has approximatly 300hrs on it and I am not sure if that is a lot or not. Any thoughts?

It has an Extreme trailer with swing away tongue that the owner just put new bunks, tires and brakes on as well as greased the bearings. Some of the interior (back seats) has already been replaced due to splitting at the seams.

Overall the boat looks to be in very good condition. Do you recommend getting a marine appraiser to look at it? Is it worth the money? Unfortunatley, I am not in the same state as the boat so don't have the ability to look at it personally.

I appreciate any and all information.

Great boat, you can fit a bunch of people in that one. How much? How often did they change the oil and trans fluid, what engine, ever hit anything with the prop, stored indoors or out, cover used and included, what kind of tower does it have, what other options does it have?

That's a great boat. 300 hrs is not a lot at all. That's 3 oil changes. I would check the packing on the shaft. It may have the PSS (dripless ) seal, but it may not.

Who's selling it? Is it a dealer or an individual?

If you are not even in the same state and you don't know much about boats (an assumption based on your post, forgive me if I'm wrong) you can't really go wrong having an independent appraisal/inspection done. Find the Tige dealer near him and speak to the individual who will be doing the inspection and tell them the deal. If it costs $150 and the boat has issues it may save you a good chunk of change for the gas spent to go look at it. If you get a clear bill of health for the boat then you'll sleep better at night--in the "boat world" $150 is piddle, if you can't afford that much then I would strongly suggest you make friends with some one who already has a boat and pay them some gas money to enjoy it with them

You may even get the seller to pay for this or split the expense with you...it never hurts to ask him, all he can say is "no." If he refuses to have the inspection I would stay clear of the boat.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

get the survey if it is out of state and you cant get to it in person. I know that when matt g. sold his 23v the buyer was in cali and they sent a surveyor, which probably locked the sale for him. If you use a surveyor you should check to see if the are NAMS or SAMS certified.

p.s I have a 20i for sale and am only 4hrs away from you if it fits what you are looking for.

Thanks guys for all the good advice. I really like the boat. I am going to talk to the owner about the surveyor idea.

It is an individual who is selling it. The owner says it has been maintained by a "marine" mechanic, but I need to get more details on that.

Let me know if there are any other things that I should look at.

Maybe the easiest thing to do is have it checked out by a Tige dealer. If they say it's ok, then it's probably in pretty good shape.

                Did I miss something here?

Very good suggestion Jason about the Marine Appraiser, however I don't believe his post question stated anything about cost or ability to afford the boat! That reply is a bit condescending don't you think?

I feel a less judgemental response to welcome this potential new tige' owner, would be more inviting to the brand and the group.

Sorry for the maybe I read to much into it.
I don't want to go to work, take me wake surfing instead!

Hey guys, I did not take the comment the wrong way. We are coming from an IO that we have had for a number of years, so I am familiar with boats, just not inboards.

I appreciate the support. I will let you know how it goes!

Nope. Not condescending in any way. Stating the facts while trying to interject a bit-o-humor. I'm sorry if you took it that way. Wasn't being "judgemental" at all in my mind.
