        Your platform looks fantastic

I justed printed your post to use as a reference to how people finish teak.

My previous boats had fiberglass platforms.

Thanks for the info and the avatar

I Removed platform every winter and garaged it. I never had any problems. Used Amazon Golden Teak Oil and Amazon One Step Cleaner (and brass wire brush). Picture shows what the swim step looked like after 7 summers of use. Razz - awesome looking platform.

            Razz,

You certainly take care of you stuff. Very nice platform and boat! If I lived back in the Valley (I grew up in Fresno) I spend my time riding/skiing
            with you.

            You do things right.

I plan on hitting it lightly with a power washer, and then going over it with a little steel wool. Then, I'll apply this: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...2&classNum=322
I have been working on mine on and off for a couple of weeks now. I may get about 30 minutes a week to sand on it. Son started sports this winter. I got my boat 2 years ago and I think someone put varnish on it. It looked great and shiny but after reading the posts I figured I needed to fix it. I have been sanding the varnish off and now I need to clean a couple of spots. It will look great when I am done. I may not have it done in 2 weeks thought. We still have about a month to month and half before we go out.

Dogbert: 2 questions, the under side of the platform. Do I need to get the varnish off of that side too? Looks ok now, was thinking about leaving it until next year. I am up to 150 grit now, are you saying to stop there? I was going to use 220 but am not sure now.

PS: what is the reason for NOT taking the platform off? I take mine off several times a year to clean the back of the boat. Should I not be taking it off?

              Thanks for all your advice.

I looked at the Teak Oil at my marina and it had teeny tiny print at the bottom of the can that said "100% Boiled Linseed Oil" there was nothing else in it. I knew I could get it for 1/2 the price at Home Depot or Menard's. It's worked so far--it looks great. I'll use this can till it's gone then try to look for a better brand I guess.

You need to do the same thing to the bottom that you do to the top....always on everything wood!!! If you don't the warp/moisture cycles will be different on the two sides and it will definitely buckle and warp over time. I learned this the hard way building a beautiful table that now looks like a wooden rainbow.

My thought on taking the deck off was that it may warp or bend over the several months and I would not be able to get it back on the boat in the spring. Taking it off for a short period absolutely will not do anything to it at all. You're fine.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

I pulled mine all off last winter while i went over the boat. I had stored it in my uninsulated outbuilding for 5 months without issue. There's abosutely no difference between it being on the boat and not as it's mutiple layers of bonded together teak and unless you either leave it in a moist (wet) environement long term or the screws are loose i don't see how it possibly can warp. All the ones i've seen warped have been seriously neglected. I put a protective coat of oil on mine before storing and no warp or mildew.

I really didn't want to mess w/ the bottom this year, but I guess I have too. I can't get it done at the rate I am going. Better pick up the pace.
