What a island. I love for the fact that you can drive 5 minutes and find a beach where no one is around.

Last time I was there I was talking to some locals and they told me of a spot that hardly no one knows about it. There is a river that comes to the ocean with a little hill on the side where the locals put a rope on the tree. We would swing and dive on the Ocean! What a place!

Kauai is definably my favorite now.

I went to Kauai 2 years ago. You might remember when the dam broke and swept several people away to their deaths. That was when I was there. I was there for 1 week and saw the sun shine for a grand total of 3 hours. We enjoyed 36 inches of rain in Lihue when I was there. The rivers were flooding with red dirt that completely muddied the ocean anywhere near where they came in. Many prime snorkeling areas were destroyed with tree branches and brown water with no visibility. The rain flooded the pool at the hotel and the first floor of one tower. The elevators conveniently picked up 3 feet of water and then dumped it out on each floor as they went up, so every floor had lots of damp carpets that could never get dry, despite the carpet dryers humming outside my hotel door for the entire time I was there.

Despite all of that, I can easily see where Kauai would be the best island. Until we got into the clouds, waimea canyon was awesome. The 3 hours of sunshine we had were on the north shore at an awesome beach, with some of the most incredible snorkeling.

We had a better time at Maui, but that was mostly due to the weather.

Hijack over. What was this thread about?
        Be excellent to one another.

Tall I think this was about houseboats, I just shared why I wasn't in the market for one for about three years. I am also holding off on buying another houseboat as my son is going to be spending the next 2 years in Rome, Itally.
I hope this comment doesn't cause another discussion. In a couple years maybe we can get back to the buying a house boat conversation.

KAUAI is the best for US Get Away from the People sorts.

The locals have renamed that middle island MAUIFORNIA....

I am headed over in early April to Oahu for a couple of days and The Big Island for 3-4 days.
I just can not wait to get out there and HANG OUT. I LOVE HAWAII...

We are taking the kids this time. They are 10 and 7, so they should really enjoy it. Maybe catch some sorkleing off of the Kona Coast again this time. The 10 year old Boy wants to catch a surf lesson. He really like WakeSurfing, so I am sure he will love the real thing.

Anyone know a good place to catch a lesson over there???

If you want to use it every year for a week or two, the shared ownership houseboat is the way to go. I am the manager (all the responsilbility and work, but no pay) of our boat. It is a 1997 55' LakeView boat. It is not the biggest or fanciiest, but well taken care of and will accomodate 12-15 if you want that many in your group. Last year 2 Tige Owners (Talltigeguy and LovinPowell) bought into the boat and haven't dropped out yet. If you use it, it is a great deal. If you don't use it, it is expensive.

We currently only have one summer share for sale- actually it is 1 plus 43% of the next week. Let me explain. All shares get on the boat on Sunday at 11:00 AM and return the boat by 2:00 PM the next Saturday. The owner of the share for sale (#15) bought the share after his (#16) and split it with share #17. So the buyer of #15 get on Sunday and gets off the 2nd Tuesday- or has 10 days instead of 7. This year the dates would be 8/16 to 8/25. The cost to buy is very, very cheap and you pay the current dues/assessments.

Let me know if you want more info.

                  Kona:
You might want to send a PM to Paublo. I bought into a houseboat that he is the coordinator on. Talltigeguy also owns a week.

We have rented houseboats at Powell for 26 years, why we didn't buy sooner is a story for another day, needless to say we would have saved a ton of money had we bought instead of rented. The price for a week on a 59 ft houseboat is over 7,500 and plenty more than that for a longer houseboat.

If you are going to rent I would suggest renting from Steve Carothers at Antelope point. Those houseboats are much newer and nicer than Wahweap's. We have known Steve for many years and he has taken very good care of us. He used to be at Wahweap, but moved over to Antelope when they opened.

Our experience with the 59' at Wahweap was that they had problems especially with black water tank smell. We haven't had any such problems with Antelope houseboats.

As for our ownership, we've only been in it for one year but that year was great, and we are looking forward to many more years. So far we love it.

                  that's my

We went to North Shore on Oahu. There is a place down town called Go-Nuts Surfing. They give lessons on North Shore and right on Waikiki as well as other islands. We drove over to NS on Oahu and meet them for lessons. My wife and I. They were great and we watched them with kids they were amazing. The trainer was from New Zealand and one amazing surfer. He made surfing so easy for those that have never surfed in there life. It was a great experience for me for sure.
