A friend of mine is/was looking into solar power to save $$$. He did the math and it would take him 30 years to recoup the costs of having it all installed... The funny thing is, he'd probably have to have it replaced by then because it would be so old.
Almost the same story with a Hybrid. The fuel savings will just about pay for the increased cost of the vehicle, about the time your ready to trade. And take it from a guy who has been on both sides of the auto business (sales and service) NO BODY wants them used, so dealer will rip you on trade in cause they know they cant get rid of them. I could get more for a gas Civic with 2x the mileage, and 2 yrs older then a hybrid Civic
No one wants to work on them either.

Now the funny thing from that story was they found someone's sunk boat. I bet some red neck is happy they found his go fast boat, with a little elbow grease, some fiberglass repair and a good engine tune-up and Its roostertails and mullets for everyone
We have a meeting to see if the Solar is really going ot be worth it next week. I am curious as high as our power bill is.

Solar on a new house build takes 10 years to pay back. On a refirb it was 12-30. I looked into a business not long ago with a bud. For our area, it is not economically feasible unless the person plans on retiring in the home they live in at 30 years old.
In 10 years, that will likely NOT be the case, and solar should be much more readily available, like in home depot, for a much larger cost advantage. At that point, I am sure the power companies will be doing something to recoup losses.
OK, we are looking at putting solar power on our house right now because PG&E is getting greedy with there prices. Our power and gas bill last month was $600.00 and it seems to go up every month with less usage. We have now turned of the Spa, cut the pool run time back, cut back TV time and are reading more books which is good anyways, and our bill continues to go up. It seems the more we cut back the higher the bill. So now we will go with Solar and make PG&E pay us.
If people in CA will do this we will reduce the dependence of power from Mead into CA and thus they could hold more water and give what we need for drinking and bathing. In CA. we have a great opportunity compared to most of the nation for solar energy. Starting next year new home builders are going to have to offer it as an options on all new construction.
I think we all need to get a little greener to tame corporate America a little and it will also help the environment.
Now when it comes to my boat sorry there is nothing GREEN about that.
Wasn't sure that Bako took their electricity from the Hoover Dam. I do remember 30 years ago the electricity being high in Bako when I lived there. Or, you can move up to Sacramento And you don't have to worry about the lake of water in some lakes.

Well that does it they have now just convinced me that this is all my fault.
I'm selling my boat, truck and jeep. Anyone know where I can get a good deal on one of those piece of crap hybrids.
Domsz06 is right, just the stupid media trying to sell a story. How come every record temperature we break is from the 1800's???????
The Gasoline engine wasn't invented until the 1900's.
Good point Domsz06
I would never sell my toys over it. Because I can assure you that it would take everyone selling there toys and going completely green to make any changes. As long as we are a fee society that will never happen.

I don't know if they do or not. I think it comes from San Fransisco. I can find out I need to call my friend who is the grid engineer for all of the central valley for PG&E. He will know

really spb? i have cut mine back and dropped my bill back to what it was before my plasma and all carley does is watch tv(all that stopped monday due to her working)
Last time I looked at solar it takes 30-40 yrs to pay back so IMO it's not worth it since you have to upfront so much up front, and plus, there used to be a catch when you have to use their power, ie bad fog days etc where there is no sun for a few days they really gouge you.
Well that does it they have now just convinced me that this is all my fault.

welcome to the media, I thought it was bad in OK, then I moved out here.

yeah thats' the other kicker, it takes 20-40 yrs to repay and then they are obsolete and you have to pay again so you never make any money. break even maybe.

I'll argue this statement. Carley bought a hybrid escape. It was 8 grand cheaper then the same v6 one and it gets 12-14 better mpg in the city and 10 on the highway. So it depends on what car your getting.
I'll also argue it on the civic. One's here are going for 16-18 brand new and the gas-0 one's are going for 14-16. This is sticker. For 2 grand tops if you figure sticker the 10 mpg would pay for it's self in a yr, pretty good IMO.
This is in cali. (plus in cali you get 3 grand back for buying a hybrid)
Chpthril, please put your point of view in here. I do agree with you on the resale though. But I could care less, as my DD get driven to the ground.

not that you won't, but be very careful, they will throw numbers at you that look good, but will not add up. Just make sure you sit back and add the numbers on your own. (I know you will, but just want to let you know to make sure you do)

we get ours from the button willow dist plan which gets it from the nuke plant on the coast.

Was this Sticker to Sticker on a V6 gas and a V6 hybrid? If so, this shows how the lack of demand has effected the price. Its been a year since I looked at the new car stickers, and at that point, comparably equipped hybrid Civics where about $3500 more then the gas versions here.

The other problem is, is how the EPA figured the MPG on these. It was a Dyno test.....very little load, no wind, 55mph, and simulated flat terrain. Put these out in the real world with stop and go traffic, hills, running 65-75mph, etc, and people found that they only got a little better fuel mileage, and this was on the hiway.

That sounds like what I have heard him say to someone else who asked that question at chruch one day. I am sure that is the case.

The hybrid escape is a 4 cylinder in both the civic and the escape. I compared the escape to the v6. The hybrids are designed to handle like a v6, and after driving both I would agree. The comparison was sticker for sticker ie not what price you can argue.
I can tell you that my supervisor has the v6 and he hardly gets 22 on the highway, where carley gets an average of 31(it's been to texas and back 3 times and that's the average, even with one time my snow board being on top) She has gotten as much as 38 on a tank on the highway granted that was driving at 80mph from Norman to Huntsville tx.
I can't speak from personal experience on the civic as I don't have one. I do know that the 08's and 07 have different ratings on mpg due to what you have discussed.
Also, you can't buy a stripped down hybrid where you can on a gas. The hybrids come with all the bells and whistles, and when you add the same stuff to the gas it's normally higher. Go out and look and you will see your correct the demand has dropped on them. But also when you figure in that you get 3k back from the gov't your money ahead. Yeah they may not last as long, or what not, who knows. but it has a 5 yr warrenty bumper to bumper and that's all she keeps her cars for anyway, so no worries. I think it was a wise investment in her behalf(her first one she has made)
Now what happens with that Hybrid in 5 years when you have to replace the battery and fork over another $2,500?
Bio-diesel is the wave of the future - bye, bye hybrids
um get rid of it duh.
and biodiesel is the worst freaking idea since ethanol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
and thanks to eveyone jumping on it now if your caught you can go to jail for not paying your road tax on it. ALSO bio diesel poluttes more then the regular diesel. Don't get me started on the biodiesel stuff. It just pisses me off.
