Are the problems with the boats and mildew attributed too outside storage in damp coastal areas?

In 14 years with my previous boat stored both inside and outside with tops that were allowed to breathe I never had a mildew issue. Chicago can get humid but not like some of the coastal areas.

The key you said was "that were allowed to breath." We never put the canvas on ours for winter storage after the first year of it. It was an absolute mess. When we went back to the plastic tarp, no probs.

Does your cover have those circular plastic vents that allow air flow and hold the upright poles? The really allow a top to breath. The shot of my boat shows one on the bow cover.

wanted to give a lil update. I went to wally world and could not find the comet spray gel. So I went with the magic eraser. It worked great. It took alot of the fading out of the vynil that has occured over the past two years. I highly recommend it

Glad to hear the magic eraser worked, it did take a couple stores to find the spray gel, but I am glad I did.

magic eraser and tilex was what I used last spring and it was really easy. I might get the spray gel and try that also.
