    Greenville SC Boat Show

This is not our local show, which opens in 8 days, but is a smaller show about an hour and a half away. We know the dealer real well, so we drove down to say "hi".

This is Clemson and USC land so the orange/white and blk/red boats do well. They had a Z1, 22Ve, 24Ve, RZ2, 20i, and 20V on display.

Z1 notable features: classic shape with the hard edges of the RZ. Cup holders in the transom > $46k, The only thing this boat was missing was ballast, which for a budget minded boater looking for the best built boat with out bell & whistles, but by no means a striped down entry level loss leader. This boat is for real

Nothing really new on the others except cup holders in the RZ2 transom borrowed from the RZ4

The others We spent a few hours cruising the show, looking at the other towboats, doing a little recon. Most everybody was there. We looked at CC, Bu , Supra, MC Centuriun, Moomba. The first 3 we stopped at, CC, Supra, and Centuriun, we were completely ignored I spent at leat 15 minutes on each boat without 1 single sales person even acknowledging we were there. Next was Bu.......the only person to speak was the Bu Rep. He recognized my from the Raleigh show last year, but couldn't remember, so he said hello, hoping I was a Bu owner. Then Moomba and finally MC.

CC: Over priced, shallow. Towers are very low, especially on the 210/211, I hit my head on the speakers and I'm not a tall dude Their revolutionary "Hydro-Gate" is an OPTION. Factory base Ballast = 900#'s and BALLAST IS OPTION ON ALL CC BOATS PER 08 BROCHURE. Ballast tanks take up MOST of the rear storage. They look built in but are juts covered with carpet. No one spoke to us.

Supra: IMO, the only boat close in price, for size and option, to a Tige. I like the fixed bimini/cargo idea, but it was too low, again I hit my head. Because of the bimini and belly sac storage, you have to crawl up to the bow. This is a no-no for us, moving about a boat should not be like climbing on playground equipment. WAKE PLATE = OPTION. Not sure about other features as there were no brochure out at all. No one spoke to us.

Centuriun: No usable storage at all on these boats. No storage under driver's console, or under cabin seats. Had to step up on a seat to get to the bow. If bimini was up, you would be crawling. If this dealer sells 1 single boat, it would be a miracle, there ENZO was littered with trash around the trailer/under swim platform. Didn't know the ENZO used hard plastic tanks and they take up better then half the rear storage, which is REAL narrow to start with. No one spoke to us.

Bu: This was the only boat that the wife kinda liked, and the first place we were greeted. The Illusion tower is cool, but the mirror has to be on the windshield. I've seen a tower fixed mirror, but the Rep said it's not from Illusion so not offered for a Bu. WEDGE = manual or power is an OPTION.

Moomba: Nothing more then an entry level Supra. This was the only dealer that spoke to us, but only after the guy ignored us while we boarded and the wife asked him a question. She asked how much ballast it came with, and would it be enough to surf..............and no one new the answer. The guy said it had 3 sacs and used his hands to show us how big they were. The third person thought it held about 200 gallons. It's not a fuel tank or something, I'm a boarder, I need to know weight He asked what we had know, so I told him a 4Winns. It went right over his head that we were surfing behind an I/O. The wife said the boat seemed a little shallow and he said it was the deepest out there, so she asked "how's it ride.......THE BEST OUT THERE he says. "how does it compare to the Tige" and it was ON. He said it cam with a 3yr engine warranty and no one else was even close..........wrong, MP = 3yrs. Theirs turns out to be 3yrs factory w/4th yr covered by outside source and is limited. It's basically an extended policy with deductible.

MC: all I can say is bring the KY. Way to much "909/flat biller" for us.

None of these boats came close to the seating comfort of a Tige.

We went to the Milwaukee show this Sat. They had a really cool looking black Z1, it was sweet. I was a little under-impressed with the seaming on it. It seemed to be tight like a small shirt on a fat belly. The material had a nice feel though. No ballast. I was hoping to be more stoked w/ the boat so I could "justify" a new one I think I'll be further ahead upgrading my boat and keeping it for a while.

Don't hang me, but....those Malibus are bada$$! Everything reeks of premium in that VTX. The integrated Sirius radio in a custom made bezel/housing, the ballast monitoring system all digital, the remotes for everything in the back seat, the interior "theatre" lighting, etc.... I had to rip my wife out of it. The price was $61k;I don't think that's too bad at all considering the modestly appointed Z1 was going for $51k. I don't remember the prices of the RZ2 but it doesn't seem like it was much less than $61k if at all. I was really surprised the Bu came with a single axle trailer--not good. Of course, all this means nothing if the boat sucks in the water, I have never driven one so I couldn't tell you my opinion on that either way.
The VRide was significantly less impressive than the VTX.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The 'bu's are cool boats... I looked at them and considered one. The dealer is based out of CA and they operate a showroom here in PHX. I just had a funny feeling that their service was not so good. It was dirty and the boats were messy on the showroom floor, and it just didn't impress me...

It's also cool that they put all those fancy electronics in those things but I'm a firm believer that water and electronics don't mix... It looks good on paper... But in reality they are a major PITA and hella expensive when they go out. And most likely, they will go out. I know they're made for a marine environment, but for me less is more in this situation. I'm not trying to put down Malibu, this is just my opinion - just my

                          First the negatives:

The threesome looks retarded with a curved crossbar. It is no wonder that Tim at Wetsounds refurbished his tower with a straight crossmember to mount the speakers to.

There is not a single cupholder for the passenger in the Z1 - what? I would take 1 or 2 inside the boat for 10 of them on the transom.

                          The positives:

The boats look great! I like the colors. It is good to hear a Z1 coming in at less than 50K. I felt a lot of grief on Wakeworld when the guy in Texas was selling them for 55K+.

Isn't the VTX a direct drive? I think there is not a comparable Tige, but generally that chunk of metal in front of the transmission runs the cost up about 4K so that you can have the engine in the rear (the V-drive).

                          Thanks for the review, CHP.
                          Be excellent to one another.

The VTX is a V drive for sure. It comes in 2 hull types--"razor" with a turn down on the outermost chines toward the stern and the "wake" hull that is straight so it doesn't make lift. Razor is more for skiing; the wake hull is pretty obvious.

I never even noticed the missing cupholders! Not very keen of me.

Well, I almost didn't have pics. I have been fighting bad battery(s) for the camera. I thought they were ok, but turned out DOA when we got there. Lucaly the wife got a new phone with a 2meg/px camera, so I was able to take some, although not the best

It does have some cupholders in the floor, just not in my pics.

Whether you go with the 3some, double-up, 4 pro 60's, or 4 pro 80's, you need swivel mounts on the outside pair, period.

Wanted to take more/better pics, but, oh well. That Z1 at the TX boat show was bitter sweet. Great idea to load up the new model for it's first show. Down side was is was 10K higher then the target price.

                              VTX is a 20' V-drive.
